Assigning Logical Drive Letters Using Win 2000?

Originally I thought I had created 3 logical drives using FDISK but only 2 are visible with Windows. The 3rd is seen as Free Space and I would like to be able to assign a drive letter to it, E which is currently used by my CD-ROM. How can I do that using the Computer Management feature under Administrative Tools in Windows 2000 Professional? If I cannot do this with Computer Management what other possible options are there for me, if any?

if its free space and it shows up on your disk management, you should be able to right click on it and format it into whatever kind of partition youd like.

I know that. But since my CD-ROM currently has drive letter E and I only have the option of assigning letters F and down. My question is how do I reaquire Drive Letter E for this new logical drive and drive letter F for my CD-ROM?

You should be able to reassign the letter for your CDROM (I personally set all my CDROMS to M: so that hard drive partitions don't get in the way). Just right-click on the CD-ROM in the disk management tool (of computer management).

When I right-click the CD-ROM the options do not include renaming. The options presented are as follows: Open; Explore; Search...; Sharing; Eject; Create Shortcut; and, Properties. I wonder if I assign drive letter F (the highest one availble) remove the CD-ROM in Device manager, reboot, will Windows reassign the drive letters in the order I want?

Sounds like you aren't in Disk Management when you are doing this. He meant right click when you are in Disk Management (which is under computer management under admin tools).

Ok I renamed the Drive letter of the CD-ROM to F and assigned E to the Free Space Now for formating the free space, having assigned it Drive Letter E, and done a quick format (should I instead launch FDISK and do otherwise - if so what?), for Allocation Unit Size should I leave it at default, 512, or 1024, and what of the Volume Label it's currently noted as New Volume?

I leave allocation unit size at default. The volume label can be anything. The name you use will show up in Explorer.

Should I perform a Quick format since I have the option or do a full one from a DOS prompt? Nothing has ever been written to this drive previously.
