Ass kissing on the job: is it required to get some where in life?

I always hear, you have to kiss ass and give in to your own dignity if you want to move up in your career. If you only put out hardwork, you're destined to be a loser at the first or second level, no higher, due to not giving in and kissing ass.

Is there any possible way around this?

I see it where I work and hate it. I don't give in. I put out extraordinary numbers but don't kiss ass. I see myself slipping. Help me God.

Don't kiss ass and don't work hard, carry around a "I don't really give a fugde" sticker on your forehead like I do. It tends to work out somehow, kinda funny actually.

Honestly? The way I look at it is that if you're good at what you do, and you treat everyone around you with professionalism and courtesy, you'll get somewhere. No need for ass kissing.

I always avoided kissing ass because it looked so blatantly obvious when other people did it around me. I mean, how could they possibly take you seriously when they HAVE to know it's an act. But just like the corny lines that shouldn't work on girls but do, so it is with ass kissing. I guess in both cases the other person appreciates the motivation behind the words if not their actual content.

I never kissed ass. Drinking beer with all of my supervisors going several levels up worked better.

Dude, I thought we already had this intervention with you.

YES, technically it's cleavage, but NO male co-worker wants you to stick your tongue between his butt cheeks. ;)

From what I've seen in technical jobs they care more about your ability and less about internal politics.

I've never seen anyone get much of anywhere on sheer ability and work ethic alone. The might get a promotion or two, but then they'll stall....and other, less-competent, ass-kissers will end up being their bosses.

It's a load of horseshit, and every person that does it is pretty much a pitiful waste of flesh. But that's just my opinion.

And yes, you can do fine in life without ever doing it.

Unfortunately the people kissing ass take advantage of those who work hard.

This man knows what he's talking about.

So many times it happens that person A does all the work and plays by all the rules then along comes person B who is petter at shaking hands, better at kissing ass, better at greasing palms takes credit for As work and he gets the praise.

That's wishful thinking at its best, total belief in Karma. Sadly the world doesn't work that way. I'm not saying that you have to be a cut-throat, ostentatious, bootlicking asswipe to get ahead. You just can't expect good things to happen to you simple because you are good to others.

Being charismatic can help a ton. I wouldn't call that ass kissing but actually being friends with those above you does help a lot. Some people will call it ass kissing because they usually hate everyone and that personal quality works against them.

Management will always play favorites on some level, and favorites are usually made up of a combination of skill level and who they actually like and feel could do the job. Their confidence in an employee usually improves based on how well they know that person.

I've also seen knowing a person work against them, I've seen someone with less skill get a job over someone with more skill just because the person with more skill was known by the interviewers and had some serious issues in regards to personality that the interviewers thought might cause a lot of problems. It was a "devil you don't instead of the devil you do". They ended up making a bad choice on the hire though, but it is all an example of how simply being a nice person is one of the best things you can do.

Well, I won't live my life base on what others are doing. Karma or not, I will feel good at the end of the day knowing I'm a decent human being. I will never have the guilt of ass kissing, or backstabbing.

If you want to change the world, start with yourself (someone else said that). Living the way I do, sometimes I am at the short end of the stick, but I will find a way because I'm not a pushover. My conscience is clean, and that is good enough for me.

I'm confrontational, I speak my mind and the truth and people tend not to like it, especially the ass kissers and that can be dangerous. But for the most part, the people that know me, know me. Some people would say that's not wise, but it's a personal choice and I can live with that.
