ASRock Z77 Extreme4 Cannot Use >1 RAM Stick

Howdy folks,

I recently purchased:

this motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=3938566&SID=)

and this RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=3938566&SID=).

I have done extensive testing (from swapping out the power supply, graphics card, running memtest, the works!), and it has led me to find that the motherboard simply cannot utilize more than one stick of RAM (of any variation!) at one time. If and when I put more than one stick in, I crash upon logging into Windows almost immediately, or shortly thereafter. It is not a BSOD, but simply the mouse freezes/entire system freezes, and I have to hard reset. I am willing to try anything again or something new, though! Throw it at me!

Any thoughts on how I can continue to troubleshoot this or potentially fix it? Through the google searching I've found that people typically just gave up and RMA'd it, but often it wasn't my particular issue, it was due to a faulty motherboard, which honestly I have not yet proven. So how can I? I'd really rather not have to go through the RMA process, as I'd love to not have to give up computerin' for another week, but alas.

Please let me know if I can get you any further information!

Thanks everyone, very much!

C:\Windows\Minidump is empty, by the way, as I'm not having a full BSOD, I guess.

That RAM isn't on the compatibility list for that motherboard, so you may have an incompatibility between the two and nothing wrong with either.

That aside, if you haven't already, update the BIOS (released 9-14-2012), then try lowering the RAM speed (1333) and/or increasing/decreasing the voltages.

Hi! Thanks for your response. I already have that BIOS, so thanks, and I tried lowering the voltages to 9-9-9-24. I am not sure how to change the voltages on my RAM (I will look that up). The RAM came with this motherboard (it was a special), so I'd hope it's compatible! If it is not, I will contact Newegg to make sure.

Thanks again! I'll report back after work tomorrow. 🙂

Reading the reviews for that RAM, there are 3 out of 14 reviewers with similar problems. I'd hope that Newegg would RMA it at no cost to you.

I really hope the same! And it seems the company is actually pretty active on the reviews, too, which is always a good sign. Damage control or not, at least they're willing to be there and work with their customers (I hope!).

All right, so I changed my voltages to 9-9-9, and one stick still works. However, two sticks...still do not work! What gives?! 🙁 I don't understand this. Does this mean that the motherboard is having problems, then?

I jumped on the same deal from Newegg.
I can run some tests later this week once I get everything together (waiting on a PSU)
The Ares sticks are not on the compatibility list for the board. Fortunately I have two other sets of ram that are so I can at least do a couple of tests..

I hope it works well with you; I am also glad you have the capability to do some tests, and I'd love to hear back to see if you have similar difficulties, or, what I'm hoping, you know of/find a configuration that works! 🙂

Here are the compatible G.Skill 4gb (snip)

Thanks! If and when I go ahead with the RMA I'll ask for one of these!

Installed PSU in a barebones system (no drives, just cpu+mobo and 2 sticks)
Mobo displays A2 code and will not post

op - What were the results of memtest? How many runs?

When running with multiple sticks, I'd crash, of course; none with one. But I only tested one stick. Now I don't have my disk drive so I can't actually run it again, sadly. 😛 I'm also thinking I'm just going to RMA this motherboard and see if that fixes my problems. 🙁

So you're all good in the hood, then? 🙂 And if so, any recommendations before I RMA?

Looks like everything is fine with the build.

Will you be sending everything back, board and ram?
I last RMA'd back in 2010 and it was fairly straightforward.

Yeah, I'm going to RMA the board and RAM just to be safe. Oh well! It happens. 🙂 Any advice for making the RMA process going smoothly as possible? I've never even mailed a package before. Luckily a friend of mine has been to the UPS store here in my town, though, so I at least know where that is. 😛
