ASRock X58 Extreme ($170) versus Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R ($200)

I don't care about the USB3.0 (as I don't really plan on taking advantage of it) or the SATA3 (as Marvell's SATA3 controllers seem limiting right now), or anything more than 3 DIMMs, I'm really only interested in a solid, well priced X58 board with well-spaced PCIe x16 slots, and I was wondering if one or the other of these boards seems like a better bet. I haven't been able to find direct comparisons of the two boards.

Thanks,

mine runs fine but, i've also used countless gigabyte boards in the past w/o incident too. i'd go w/ the cheaper one again though -- very satisfied so far! 🙂

You may also want to consider the Extreme '3' which has USB 3.0 and SATA III, but that's if those are features you're looking for. -Edit: wow, shows I didn't read the OP well enough. 😛

I had a bad experience with an open box Extreme from newegg, but that was open box of course. Everyone else seems to be having a lovely time with theirs.

So I guess try the ASRock. Its cheap, solid, and does what needs to be done.

Thanks for input, it's starting to sound like it's personal preference, which is a problem since I'm really torn even with that.

To me, the ASRock reviews have been really positive, and that's really sold me on the board, but I trust the Gigabyte name, and the BIOS and software seem well designed and easy to use (this is my first build). Also, my local microcenter has the Giga board at the same price as online retailers, so a return would be easier, but I *really* don't want to have to return the board anyway, and I'd hope that a new product should be solid, so I'd rather not base my choice on that.

Yeah, if they dropped the price another 10-20$, even on a rebate, it'd become the ultimate steal. It gives P55 boards a run for value as-is.

Thanks all, I appreciate it, I think that I've decided to go with the ASRock X58 Extreme, it really seems like a well-though-out board for an excellent price.

That said, there's been one board that's been nagging me from the beginning, since I saw it win Anandtech's mid-level comparisons, and the xbitlabs review of it, the Asus P6T Deluxe (which I found for $250). Despite loving everything that was said about the board, I couldn't see how it's worth $80 more than the ASRock X58 Extreme unless someone really wanted to push their CPU and RAM as far as possible (in which case they might probably go for an even more expensive board anyway). Still, it comes back to mind, and here's why:

While the ASRock Extreme reviews have been incredibly positive, they've been positive for the fantastic value it is, with solid potential at a low cost, and an important note is that many reviewers have had stability issues overclocking that they were able to fix through careful adjustment. The P6T Deluxe, however, beyond I imagine having greater overclocking potential, lower board latency, and better power regulation, seems to be easy to overclock without much effort, the Anandtech and Xbitlabs reviews both commented on how it just works. For a first-time builder like myself, that was a real attraction, especially coupled with overclocking software that seems to be actually effective and useful (although Anandtech commented that while it works great for quick, easy, and mild overclocking, the system does end up devoting more resources than it should just to the app).

So, on the plus note I've decided between the giga UD3R and the ASRock X58 Extreme, in favor of the ASRock (more for just how I feel about it and the 30 bucks saved, the UD3R still seems like a great board for the price).

I'm sorry though to introduce another, and very different, option, and I'm wondering what kind of usage people think would make the P6T Deluxe a better choice even for $80 more than the ASRock X58 Extreme? Or is it never really worth that price difference?

Thanks again for the input!

I've got the Asrock board and I've had it up and running for a little over a week. It took some tweaking to get my OCZ ram running correctly, but since then it's been rock solid. I like it a lot and overall I'm well pleased. I got mine for $153.99 from Ewiz, using their showers15 promo code a couple weeks back.

sounds like you really want the asus p6t....dont buy a board and 2 weeks later your its nice but i wish i would have got the p6t...ive done this so think about it before making your choise.....

Bought mine a week and half ago on ebay for $130something shipped new, no tax (!). Some guy had a bunch of them.

Currently been running stable fine w/ an I7 and 4gbs 1333 Corsair XMS3.

I've been reading that you might want to stay away from the OCZ DDR3 units with this board, lots of complaints on their forums.

An update to my earlier post, my OCZ ddr3 failed. OCZ is now on my excluded list.

Sorry to hear that :\.
Yeah, it's pretty rowdy over there in the x58 board section. I am glad I did some minor researching before buying the OCZ sticks (I too almost bought a pair)

Don't ever underestimate the value of local support. You just don't know if you'll have problems or not. If you do, you'll be happy that there's a local dealer there to help you out.

Thanks everyone for all the input, I've been watching the responses religiously to see how people feel about their boards, and at the end of the day I think I would be happy with any of the three, just though I should let you know what my decision ended up being. The ASRock Extreme v. the P6TD Deluxe was a tough choice, since the ASRock Extreme seems like such a solid board at $80 less. Ultimately, I've decided to go with the P6TD Deluxe, even for the hefty price difference. Based on how satisfied people are with it, I think I would be happy with ASRock Extreme and that I could get it to do everything I want it to, but there's a level of security (I hope) and ease of use in the P6TD Deluxe in that I can hopefully get it to do everything I want with my limited knowledge, lack of experience, and minimal hassle. I don't know whether that is worth the extra $80, but when the money's spent and gone I hope to be very happy with the board and what I can do with it.

So, thanks for all the help! I'll let you know how it works out.

I bought an Asrock X58 Extreme for my new build about a month ago. Couldn't get it to POST with 3x2GB sticks of Corsair DDR3 1600C7, although I could manage it with 1 stick (regardless which of the 3 sticks). Ended up RMA'ing the board back to the Egg, and moved up to the Asus P6X58D Premium (kudos to the Egg for a great RMA policy). No problems with the Asus board, overclocked my I7 920 to 21 x 191 with hardly any extra VCORE (apx 1.21 volts). Luck of the draw? Maybe - but from now I'm sticking with "non-budget" boards. YMMV

Which board did you buy from Ebay? Asus, Gigabyte, or Asrock?

Thanks.

What memory did you buy to upgrade it with, and what are the timings set at?
