Hi guys, have not read all the way through this thread yet, but, having read a fair bit on these boards it seems to me that there are two problems in general.
1) SATA ?SATA II support is flaky
2) The motherboard doesn't seem to like optical drives on the ATA connectors. It also seems to prefer ATA HDD's to SATA drives.
My suggestion would be to pick up a cheap IDE controller card (preferably non raid) something like
this one and connect your optical drives to that. It's what I currently do with my nForce2 board since the nForce 1 & 2 series has always been slightly weird when it comes to optical storage. When I get my cpu in and set up my Asrock it's the way I'll set it up also.
I'd also avoid using SATA hard drives if at all possible (not a problem for me, all my drives are currently ATA) and see if that solves your issues.
Someone on ArsTechnica forums discovered that some power supplies (he had an Antec model) do not supply -5 volts anymore. Apparently this board requies -5V to function properly.
Perhaps it may be beneficial to place a small heatsink on the clock generator chip (the ICS chip beside the PCI-e 1x slot) - some of you feel the boards gets more unstable with time, perhaps the chip overheats?
One last thing, can people list their board revision in their posts - mine is a V1.05
