I've been running a 3D rendering suite in multi-threaded mode to really burn-in the CPU and see how much I can get out of it. So far, with ~95% CPU usage, the stock cooler gets up to 58°C, with a very noisy 4800RPM scream coming from the fan.

Actually, 2.4GHz (with the 1MB L2 cache per core) would be equivalent to an X2 4800+, so you're past that. I've got an "FX-60" (Opty 170 @ 2.6GHz) myself :p

I ordered my CPU as OEM so I didn't get the stock cooler, but I'm a bit surprised it gets that hot. You're probably alright if it doesn't get any warmer than that, but I'd suggest looking into a better HSF unit...I've got an SI-120 and my load temps peak around 47°C. Of course it'll depend on your ambient temps too, but that is still rather high.

Ah, so I've got an almost FX-60 =P

My temps are a little high probably due to a couple factors. Its rather warm in this room, I've overclocked it by around 766MHz, and I've disabled Cool'n'Quiet so my idle temps are a little warm. My load temps are probably high due to the stock heatpipe cooler, but they stick below the rated 65°C for the cap. The Opty stock cooler isn't like the standard A64 cooler, its got a pretty huge copper base, heatpipes, and a fairly good fan. It just doesn't have much in the way of fin area. I was thinking about getting a TT Blue Orb 2 to slap on, as I've read they're fairly decent.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835106069

Now all I need is to save a few hundred for a half-ass decent dual gpu pcie video card and I can pass this fx5200 to my g/f ;-)

So no word on how to check vcore via hardware?

Where can I stick a voltmeter to see what my vcore is?

huh?

I think he just didn't want to answer your question :p

No one really knows how high a particular CPU will overclock, but as a guess, you should be able to hit 2.3-2.4GHz easily with that CPU and this board on near-stock voltage. Any more than that, and you might possibly need to voltmod.

Keep in mind that the 3800+ doesn't come with the heatpipe cooler. You might want to get the 165.

I didn't think about that (I haven't bought a CPU with retail/stock heatsink in years). If that is indeed true (that the heatpipe coolers only come with the DC Opty's and maybe the higher X2's), then it would be worth the extra price for that alone.

Yeah the copper heatpipe sink only comes with the Opterons and maybe FX's AFAIK. Sadly, I was only able to get the OEM 165 so I had to steal my Zalman 7000 off of my P4, which is now running with an old rattly retail HSF :(

So my load is around 48C with the 7000AlCu (which is AFAIK not as good as the 7700 - and not all copper). That's running 2466 MHz (247*9) at default 1.35v. Idle is around 28C.

On topic - I think CPU is a little cooler with the 1.6 BIOS than it was with the 1.2 - or maybe it's just colder in here :) I wasn't able to run OCWBeta2. I got all of the stability problems people were having :) The nice thing about going with the 3800 with this mobo is you can overclock higher, with the 10x multi you can go to 2.74 without going with early BIOS. Nice to know however that these chips are rated for 65C. That's good to know once summer rolls around - I want to turn my fan speeds down and it gets hot in my living room in summer.

I got mine from Chiefvalue for around $35 refub.
Running 1.5 bios I can get my 3200+, which wouldnt overclock on any other board at all, to 2.5 on stock volts 150HTT 10x.
Temp on my cheap ass hs is 40ish c at idle and 50ish c at load.

Word of warning though it was crashing erraticly even turning itself on at times because it hated my Soundblaster gamer audigy 2 card. Ditched the sound card with a Hercules Digifire and havent had one crash at all with her. And yes I updated to the newest drivers and everything I could think of before getting rid of the sound card and since doing it it hasnt turned on by itself or crashed once so it hated Soundblaster more then me. OH and it was doing it overclocking the cpu or not so it was the sound card ;)

Just wondering what Revision of this board you have?. Can check in CPU-Z if you're wondering. Mines v1.00 and it's plagued with problems. Heard 1.05 fixes SATAII problems some people have, trying to check up on that. I am NOT talking about BIOS version.

I doubt that anyone much cares, but I got my new RAM in today...2x512 Corsair Value Select PC3200 to add to the faster 2x512 Corsair PC3200 stuff I had already...I'm up and running at 260x10, 166MHz memory divider (for a RAM speed of 216MHz)...2T of course, but I'm very happy with my 4x512 now (especially since I got a great deal on the RAM on the FS/T forums here;))...:)

RE Heatpipe heatsink:
I bought a 4400+ and it comes with the good heatsink. So the only one we don't know is the 4200+ (which im sure someone knows somewhere).

Wow this thread is long :)

Apologies if this has been asked already but I gave up at about page 40 and skipped to the end. Given that ULi was bought by nvidia recently, is the am2 riser card still guaranteed to make an appearance? Will the ULi drivers receive any further updates to ensure compatibility on release of the card or? And lastly, is there expected to be any kind of performance hit with the riser card in use as compared to natively am2 mobos?

This board looks like the perfect one for me yet it just raises so many questions. Any answers you can give would be greatly appreciated!

AM2 riser card:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=28&threadid=1811954&enterthread=y (I'm assuming it'll show up around the time that AM2 CPU's do)

ULi drivers...should still be getting updates as needed, I don't think Nvidia is going to kill off ULi. And there shouldn't be any performance hit with the AM2 riser card, because I believe the "Future CPU Port" slot is a direct HyperTransport link to the chipset(?), and the jumpers switch the active link between the socket on the board, and the socket on the riser card...or something like that. :p

I'd have to assume that it's bigger. I knew the NV Silencer was a dual-slot cooler, but I don't quite understand how he only has access to one PCI slot (instead of 2 of the 3)...is the NV Silencer really THAT big (as in, wider than two slots)?

Yes - the AGP slot is really close to the next PCI slot. So a large 2-slot cooler could conceivably block 2. @ Arkham: with the X800 XTPE you can theoretically use all 3 PCI slots - but I would really leave the top one open to let the fan do its thing. It is a single-slot cooler, but it doesn't necessarily mean you can put something right beneath it :)

Can anyone familiar with the board give a summary of the board's overclocking characteristics?

Would anyone here happen to know if anyone has tried the socket 754 bridge with this board? I'm hopeing I can get this board and continue useing my 754 CPU till I save up for a 939 CPU then in the future get the AM2 Board and upgrade my CPU then. :) I'm also going to use a AGP card for now and eventualy upgrade to PCIe. It would seem I should just save more and buy a lot at once but this way appeals to the inner gagetteer in me. 8)

That's a good question - I don't know the answer. You might try asking over at the OCW Forums, their ASRock forum is pretty active, with a lot more users than we have in this one thread over here ;)

I'm aware of how close the AGP slot is to the PCI slots - I'm running an AGP 6800GT about 2mm away from my HDTV tuner. :p Ideally I'd have a slot free to help with ventilation, but I'm using all three PCI slots - HDTV tuner (w/ daughtercard) and my Audigy 2. Once I re-did my 6800GT's heatsink several weeks back, I've not had any issues with overheating or artifacting, so I'm not all that worried. :)

Edit: I remember being glad (when I first heard about this board) that they still managed to include three PCI slots (along with AGP, two PCI-E, and one 'Future CPU Port' :p) for just that reason...I knew I'd need all three.

Yes, it's pretty impressive. I just put a Zalman on my X800, so bye-bye one PCI slot. I even moved my wireless adapter to the bottom slot so it wouldn't be too close to the HSF

AT Review.

HTT limited to 274
VCore only goes .05v higher than stock in .025 increment
VDIMM has only 2.5 and 2.7 options

Other than those 3 things (what am I forgetting) it's really good for $70.

After looking at it again, I can fit a PCI card in the second slot also (it is very tight however), as long as it's not a long card. My Audigy card will not fit in that slot because there is a part of the fan that protrudes out of its cooler that was ribing on the end of my Audigy.

Here's a pic that shows what I'm trying to say.

Thanks for the info! That's great news. I can put my new IntelPRO 10/100/1000 NIC beside it, since it's such a low-profile card. Then my NEC-based USB card, which is also small, THEN the big fat Audigy.

I'm hoping to have a slightly more efficient system by disabling onboard net, usb, and audio.

You can definitely do that. I don't know about more efficient, but you will definitely have better audio and faster network !
