asrock 4coredual-sata2 ddr2 problem

K so I've been running 2gb (2x1gb) of ddr 400 on this board for a while now. I bought 2gb of ddr2 667 (2x1gb) and everytime i log into windows it crashes. Sometimes instantly, other times it takes a while. So I just put the ddr back in and it works fine. Anyone know what would cause this. The memory tests good and no I'm not putting ddr and ddr2 in at the same time.

You probably need to clear the BIOS. BIOS still thinks you have the DDR400/DDR400 timings, etc. I would clear it completely.

You definitely need to not cross post: one thread per issue....can't put thread in 5 places to get five opinions. That leads to anarchy, anarchy leads to hate, hate leads to The Dark Side.

ya i dind't mean to, was an accident. I have cleared bios before and set everything to factory settings, still didn't work.

Hi,

how did you clear BIOS? May I recommend: set the clear BIOS header pins to clear, AND, take out the CR2032 battery for a while...at least an hour, maybe even overnight if you have no joy after an hour or so. (Lots of debate about whether or not that is necessary, works, etc. It has worked for me.)

Also, you were mucking around with the memory: machine unplugged when you did that? And, is it possible you disconnected something else while you were swapping out the memory modules?

If i remember correctly all i had done as far as resetting bios was resetting to factory settings. i did try to take the battery out but its in there pretty good and i didn't want to break the part that holds it in. No I didn't disconnect anything, i double and triple checked, and of course i unplugged my computer then touched the chassis.... all that jazz.

Glad you unplugged it.

Battery: should be a little shim of metal holding battery in, small flat edge screwdriver should gently flip it up, battery pops up or falls out if case on side.

To reset: you used the reset jumper? How long did you leave jumper on?

I don't think its a jumper. Its just a option in bios that resets everything and re-adjusts to your hardware configuration.

Manual, page 11, CLR CMOS jumper is #19 in diagram.

It's at 4 oclock, next to CMOS battery.

PCI slots are on the other side, PCI 3 is at about 7 o'clock.

Says to unplug PC, wait 15 seconds, then put a jumper on pins 1 and 2 of CLRCMOS1

Leave that pin on for a minute or so.

If that does not clear CMOS completely, then it's time to take the battery out for a while.

BTW, who made that new DDR2 667 memory: what brand? What model?

yes but i checked it and it says nothing about it. It briefly touches on how to push the memory into the mobo and says ddr and ddr2 will only fit in their kind of slots. its the worst manual i've ever seen... not informative at all.

Hi,

that Crucial memory is fine; 1.8v (JDEC standard), lifetime warranty. All Good.

Just bought some 2 x 2GB Crucial on sale.

How is CMOS clear going?

i read through the manual and found something in bios i didn't see before. when you set the memory type and speed it can either automatically do it or you can set what speed. it says (ddr266) 133mhz. now could that be the problem, would i have to run this memory at 133mhz to have it work because if so i'd be better off sticking with the ddr400.

Use "auto" memory settings. That's the good thing about that Crucial RAM, it's JEDEC standard, should work fine.

DDR2 667 ram gets the "333" setting. See p. 34 of manual.

But auto settings should work fine. Recommend you not get too fancy.

well see thats what i thought too but I'm jsut confused because it doesn't give an option to run the ddr2 667 at that speed

it says (ddr266) 133mhz. now could that be the problem

Yes, because you don't have ddr 266 memory anymore....it's DDR2. 333.

Clear CMOS.

Restart, look at BIOS, auto; same with CPU, should be auto.

It seems to be working jsut fine now. Only issue I saw after checking in BIOS was instead of running the memory at 667 its at 533. I'll post any further issues but hopefully there wont be any🙂

Glad to hear it.

533 versus 667: unlikely you would ever notice a difference in speed without benchmarks.

And, may I recommend: no more VIA chipsetted motherboards?

Hate to say it, but: Intel chipsets are the gold standard. AMD and Nvidia chipsets are very very good. VIA chipsets are silicon pain.

Again, glad you are back up.
