My brother is a typical teen who enjoys a game now and then but mostly on PC rigs than PS3 or Xbox, etc. But this does not mean that he leaves my laptop alone at all.

After about 3-4 days is Diwali "Festival of lights" in India and i wanted to get him something special maybe his first laptop..

I boiled the available notebooks down to two types of laptops he will maybe like:

Acer aspire one XP "120Gb"

HP Pavilion dv4 1155 "AMD Puma 3200 integrated"

Now i know that a HP is almost twice the cost of the Acer aspire one. But i also know its almost twice as heavy too. So my question is:-

1.Can the Aspire one play 480p 1000Kbps DIVX movies properly.
2.Is 1.2Kg less/more really that big a deal.
3.Is Acer aspire one a strong enough laptop "Someone sat on my old Zenith laptp which broke the screen in quite bad and also dented the frame at a collage party"
4.How much better is my M1330's C2D at playing DIVX/Xvid movies than a a 1.6Ghz Atom??
5.Does gaming on 640*480 or 800*600 on the acer aspire hit the right spot???

i'd say the dv4 1155 just b/c its got a lot more versatility
the aspire one is more of a niche product.

I'm answering these questions based on owning an Asus 1000H, but pretty much all netbooks have the same exact spec.

1. Yes, it can actually play 720p movies fine.
2. A 10'' notebook hits the sweet spot for in terms of having a keyboard that is large enough to feel normal, and a size that is small enough to be nonintrusive. After you go smaller, you can't really go back.
3. I've honestly heard bad things about the build quality of the Acer Apire Ones, and much better about Asus and MSI (wind)'s offerings. My Asus is solid as a rock. They all cost the same.
4. A lot better at gaming, but for divx, you can max out the 1028 x 600 resolution and play fine using the Intel GMA950 chipset. However, 720p is about what the atom n270 + Intel chipset can handle, so using the VGA out onto an LCD, expect wide stuttering on anything above that, and forget about running anything at 1080P. A C2D can do everything you ask of it and more.

For gaming, expect games like Rise of Nations, WC3:TFT, C&C: Generals to be about as much as an Atom + Intel integrated graphics can handle and nothing more above that. If you get a classier netbook with a 9300GM graphics card, it can offload h264 and 1080P divx encoding/decoding, and play it silky smooth on your LCD TV.

5. it can handle 800 x 600 or 1024 x 600 fine, whether the screen will be stretched a bit in the former.

thanks ed21x looked at 901 and 904 and the 1000H seems the best in the stable because 904 uses 1000H case and aint that light.

while i do quite like my 1000H, Asus has already rolled out two replacements for it (s101 and n10), so those would probably be better options...
