2 seconds to check for blind spots also is about 250 feet of travel for me on the highway.

So you do 85 on the highway? Wow. Is that common in Florida? Seems like the fastest speed limit I remember down there was 70. Drive 85 here for the whole ride and you'll be picking up tickets left and right.

I'm not gonna bash your new mirrors. I say good for you. If you're gonna drive that fast, any extra margin of safety you can add to protect you and other drivers is money well spent.

Yes the limit is 70mph. I am often being passed at 85mph.

This is why these work for my needs. I am covering a lot more ground per second than the guy doing even 55mph.

The cops here are more concerned about HOV lane violations than our bad drivers. Speed isn't so much the issue but you deal with those weaving in and out of traffic across multiple lanes at speeds higher than 90mph.

I don't have the time to deal with a used part that comes in non-perfect condition. The $100 isn't worth the risk.

I traded recently my ZHP knob I replaced with new for a 'mint condition' ashtray. It came with scratches all over it that didn't show in the pictures. The seller still assured me 'it was in excellent condition for being a part from 2002'.

It's very difficult to change lanes esp when you can't see clearly and have to watch the traffic in front.

I drive 'spiritedly'. Normally I flex my schedule so I commute off-hours...typically I do 10-6.

I have survived over 6 pile ups since my new job brings me down into the Ft Lauderdale/Miami areas regularly. A couple times I made a leap of faith into a lane I wasn't totally sure on (but much better than rear ending people or more commonly watch the guy behind me go past where I was and hit the guy in front of me).

LOLWUT? "ZHP" Gear knob? The e46 M3 has only ever had one gear knob, even the ZCP has the same knob as the standard car...

I'm not sure this isn't just some really long winded play by you to get everyone thinking you're all rock-star.

Thanks for the history lesson???

I have a ZCP. I have replaced my knob and boot with the ZHP and alcantara setup.

I originally traded the ZHP knob which fit loose on my new UUC SSK. The new one ended up fitting the same way.

The trade was for a sunglass holder that had the same knob I needed. It arrived in terrible condition.

The ZHP knob originated on the E46 330i with Performance Package (option code ZHP). It's much nicer than the stock M3 knob IMO, despite lacking the lighting of the stock one. It's shorter and weighted. I have ZHP knobs on both my E90 330i (stock 6MT shifter) and E46 M3 (which has an SSK - I don't know what brand but assume it's an OEM one).

80 is pretty typical here too. Speed limit is 75 on some of the freeways out in the desert. Typically 65mph in the cities but everyone goes 75-80 most of the time when traffic is moving. You'll never get pulled over for going 70 in a 65 zone.

I'm not sure how those mirrors would benefit you anymore at 80mph vs 60mph. They either help or they don't. You either have blind spots or you don't.

By the way, it doesn't take 2 seconds to check a blind spot. Turn your head a few degrees and you should be able to pick up a car there without even taking your eyes off the road.

Fair enough. Not a mod I would do, but to each his own. It's nice to see some people can talk about these cars without calling out the whole board.

For what it's worth I regularly drive faster in my M3 than alky is copping to here, and most highways in Minneapolis have a 55 MPH speed limit. I am careful and reasonably skilled, but I do drive faster than the law would prefer. The car just coaxes me into being aggressive, I guess.

Just to throw my 5 cents in, I've got the UUC leather knob and it's absolutely fantastic. It takes out good 70% of the m3 transmission clunkyness

So let me get this straight, these new mirrors would allow you to:

1) Weave across multiple lanes more safely.

2) Drive more safely at 15+ MPH over the speed limit.

3) Allow you to avoid pileups in busy traffic.

I don't know, but it sounds like a bunch of BS to allow you to be a more dangerous driver. Personally, I have encountered some major pileups where traffic goes from a free and clear 80mph to 0 in less than 200 ft. Brakes and traction account for more than anything in those situations. Attentiveness accounts for more than anything in that situation. Being able to change lanes abruptly? I can't even imagine how that would be helpful much less more dangerous for the drivers I am obstructing by making some James Bond-esque maneuver to get to safety.

In the end, it sounds like a bunch of BS. I've ridden with family in Atlanta on a major interstate/hwy that gets backed up for miles. No special devices on the 740i, just an attentive driver who brakes when the red lights flare up in front of him/her.

Now tell me I am an idiot, or that I don't know what "real" driving is like. That's fine. I just know that vearing in and out of multiple lanes at the time of a pileup is the last thing any driver should do. If you're driving in an area that frequently encounters pileups or excessive traffic, the 2 second rule isn't enough. Make 4 or 6. If you get to your destination 4 or 6 seconds later, does it really matter?

?

maybe driving like this is the cause for all the pileups :hmm:

That just looks like a forced lane change. The guy probably saw him and figured the other 'smaller' car would yield.

I tried the SAE method but my left mirror didn't have enough "angle" to fully eliminate the blind spot. If the mirror was pushed outward, the blind spot simply moved toward the rear of the car. The right mirror was able to pick everything up (it also is the one that has the warning message on it).

This is an admitted digression, but I find it interesting that people are not inclined toward mods like this one. I think the steering wheel and shifter are among the most important parts when it comes to enjoyment of a car, since you're constantly touching them. This knob costs $60 and makes a HUGE difference in shifting, both functionally and in terms of feel. This is especially true on my E90, which has a really tall, slippery knob - it looks nice but it's really not functional. I actually have an E90 M3 steering wheel on my E90 as well - the stock sport wheel is nice but the M3 one is better, especially for someone with big hands like mine.

I'm more of an OEM guy, myself, but I do understand. The E46 shift clunkiness is mostly due to the fact that the getrag unit is just clunky. The faster you shift the smoother it feels, shift slow and it's like driving farm equipment. No doubt most of the improved feel is due to shifting quicker due to the shorter shift knob.

I can now infer what was originally posted.

Whatever floats your boat. I don't think it's a matter of people not being able to afford these - there are plenty of people here who easily could. It's more that we don't see any point to them. There are certainly worse ways to spend your money, but I don't really see the upside of these.

Exactly, if you are not paying attention you should not be driving.

no bro, not at all. I don't think you have any understanding of driving here in S. Florida.

We have pile ups almost daily due to people switching lanes not realizing that lane is stopping.

I follow the two second rule bro, ev'ry day.

I was in Ft. Lauderdale for 1.5 years driving an E46 M3. Spent plenty of time on 95 between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami which is SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the traffic up near West Palm Beach area. I never had an issue with the mirrors.
