Aspartame

There is not a single valid, peer reviewed and repeated study showing harm from normal, regular use of Aspartame. Not one. None, nada, zilch.

The fear surrounding Aspartame is nothing but ignorant hysteria.

There are a lot of fear mongering websites set up about Aspartame. But ALL of them lack the ONE thing needed to prove harm: A peer reviewed and repeated study.

The same goes for Splenda.

Is oxygen bad for you in large quantities?

This is the type of crap only an idiot would say.

Bwahahaha

Actually, yes, it is. In fact, it can kill you.

Ever hear of acute oxygen poisoning and pulmonary edema?

Who's the idiot now?

Quoted for stupidity.

Beat me to it.

Homestarmy, you seem so confident in yourself that I challenge you to find one thing that isn't bad for you in large quantities.

Moderation in all things is the key.

Yeah uhm i'm pretty sure even eating a small quantity of money will pose serious health risks.

Aspartma IS bad...

if you were connected, for 24h a day and for 100 years, on a machine distributing aspartame in your system.

My friend once told me there is a small mushroom much more deadly that grows in the ground. And what do we do when we pick up an apple that fell on the ground? At worse, we blow on it or at best, we wash it.

Ingest too much money and yes, it can kill you.

Please send me a bunch to test that theory.[/quote]

I've got a few thousand pennies I would be more than willing to donate for this experiment. Most have been around since the 60's so they've got a nice variety of bacteria to help strengthen your immune system i'm sure.

Link?

Aspartame was discovered in 1965 by James M. Schlatter, a chemist working for G.D. Searle & Company. Schlatter had synthesized aspartame in the course of producing an anti-ulcer drug candidate. He discovered its sweet taste serendipitously when he licked his finger, which had accidentally become contaminated with aspartame.

In 1969 G.D. Searle applied for the first patent on aspartame as a food additive

Psst...wait no everybody called it before I did.

Yes, it can kill you.

What kind of chemist licks their fingers?

"Hey, Bill, try this stuff. It smells likes almonds...."

Ouch 😀

homestarmy owned himself badly in this thread

My opinion is that while it may not be *good* for you, it is not totally bad for you in reasonable doses. There has been tons of good studies done literally over the whole world and none of them has provided totally concrete evidence that it is indeed 'bad' for you when taken at appropriate doses.

I personally favor Splenda simply because I like the taste. I work as a research chemist and I don't put any stock into this 'Splenda is dangerous for you because it is chlorinated' crap out there. I work on private laboratory projects that are driven in parts by FDA regulatory drivers (e.g. GMP and GLP) and the FDA is immensely anal about accepting data. Yes, statistically there are times when things will fall through the cracks (hello Vioxx) but in the vast, vast majority of cases if it can get FDA approval you can just about take it to the bank and bet on it being reasonable safe when consumed in reasonable doses.

As has already been stated, despite myriad studies undertaken, not a single one has been able to link aspartame to cancer or any other illnesses. And there have been dozens of studies performed.

Aspartame is a chemical reaction of two hazardous chemicals. All chemical reactions can be driven in reverse to at least a small extent. How much it can be reversed depends on where the equilibrium state lies at the given temperature. A long time at elevated temperature can reverse aspartame back to the hazardous chemicals but only in very small quantities because the equilibrium is far towards the aspartame side of the reaction. While aspartame itself is safe, these chemicals aren't. Thus, if you eat nothing but aspartame for your whole life - aspartame which has been exposed to elevated temperatures for a very long time - you might have a very slight increased risk of health problems.

Of course, no one eats just aspartame, thus you are safe.
