My grandfather was just rushed to the hospital via ambulance. He has been on oxygen and steroids for years now due to his lungs being damaged. He was a smoker, but he also flew in WWII. He was a Belly Gunner in the flying fortress bombers. He servered with Honor, won many medals, and is one of my Heros. He retired from the steele plant, then opened his own wood working shop. Built a lot of furniture.

Homer Carroll is his name, but to those who know and love him, he was Cotton, to the grand kids, he is Papaw Cotton.

I hope this comes out as good news. While I have prepared myself for such a day, it is never easy.

Best of luck to him and your family.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather.
I lost mine 9 months ago. He raised me since I was 3 and he was like a father to me. 🙁

He has lived a long, good life so far, Scott, in a loving family, and served his country with distinction. My prayers go out to him and to you and yours.

Thanks to all of you.

He is at baptist Memorial Hospital in Gadsden Alabama. He is now stable, and we are waiting on more information.

Yeah, he survived the WWII. He had one of the highest hit counts in the Air Force, as well as a very high Kill count. Some of the stories he has told us had us laughing, some had us awestruck, and others left us realizing just how humble this man is.

Basically what destroyed his lungs was a combination of several things:

Flying in an unpreassurized aircraft over the English Channel in frigid temps,
Working in a steele plant around super heated air
SMOKING
and the disease that killed Jim Henson, destroyed almost all of his lung capacity

He built my china hutch that is in my house, and several pieces of furniture.

So now we sit and wait.
