Best to do it as a % of your current salary or as a dollar amount?

IE. "I would like a 10% raise in my salary" vs "I would like a $5 raise in my salary"

Hmm... Reasoning?

There is one more option that I didn't think of... Asking for a specific dollar amount as in "I would like a salary increase to $xxxxx"

I highly doubt my boss knows my current salary off the top of his head considering he manages over 20 people so I was thinking about asking for a straight-forward number because he may already assume I am around there considering the amount of work I do.

Decisions, decisions.

Jan: What's wrong with you?

Michael: Ohh. It was a weird day. I accidentally cross-dressed. And then Darryl made me feel bad for not making any money. And then I had to ride up here with stupid Toby. And then, your assistant, is all young and hot. And I---

Jan: Okay, Michael. I can offer you a 12% raise, but you have got to ask for 15.
Michael: Well that's ridiculous I'm not gonna make---

Jan: No, just... I just need you to ask for it, so I can record that you asked for it. Okay?

Michael: Ah, so... All right, Levinson. Here's the rub. I would like a 15% raise.

Jan: No. But we can offer you 12.

Michael: But you just said 15.

If your boss has a hard time figuring out what you make then he/she should really go by percent. I'd love to walk into your boss' office and say "I need a raise to, hrm, maybe, like, xxxxxx"?

Now when an employee says I want an xx% raise, easy enough. Are they worth another xx% no matter what they already earn?

BTW, This is a round about way of saying I agree with Fobot.
