Asking for a bonus at work, how does this sound?

you're obviously getting different opinions on how to handle it, but since u feel that you have nothing to lose by asking for the bonus----here's how i would approach it. send an email to your boss saying something like:

When I came on board in May, several of my co-workers had mentioned to me that a $5,000 bonus would be given to those who completed the contract. Would you mind letting me know if I am on the list to receive this bonus? Thank you in advance for your prompt reply.

my guess is that your boss will be somewhat surprised that you know about the bonus, but the fact that you're inquiring about it means someone will have to tell you whether or not you are eligible and that you are somewhat expecting it (otherwise you wouldn't have asked). also, since you're doing it in writing...and if they are truly a company that upholds their promises, he'll merely forward your email to the appropriate person/department.

good luck!

I like your approach, thanks a lot for the advice.

I don't see any reason why they'd give you the bonus. The bonus is intended to keep people who know they will be losing their job from leaving early. You were hired for a specific contract term. Your losing your job at the end was known when you were hired, and your staying through the end of the contract is not out of the ordinary. They did not need to offer you a $5000 bonus to stay through the end of the contract, and now that the contract is ending they have no incentive to give you the money.

In summary, unless the company just likes to piss money away for no reason, don't count on getting the bonus. But good luck.

Edit: And furthermore, you were likely brought on to replace one of the people who opted to leave and forgo the bonus. The point of the bonus was so they could avoid having to hire someone like you - someone who, as a contractor, is already being compensated much better than your coworkers. To give you a bonus that was intended to help them avoid having to hire you... would make no sense.

Actually I was supposed to leave in August but they kept stretching out and I am here until the end of December...ah, the plot thickens. Also, the salary was well-known and the same for everyone who worked here, as we were all contract as the entire team has been for like 7 years.

This works.

Perfect wording. You're not asking about a bonus, you're already expecting it.

hrmm, seems like thats a bit ballsy and direct, I guess it doesnt matter at this point.
