Ask a paranoid guy anything...

I'm paranoid about death and risks. I always overanalyze small risks and try to decrease them by any means possible.

Ask away...

Are you worried about manhole covers exploding from underneath you as you walk over them, shearing off a leg or two?

Oh.. Thanks a lot. One more thing to worry about.

Yesterday I covered all unused electrical sockets in my apartment so that nothing can accidentally touch them and start a fire.

What if the covers touch them and start a fire?

I leave the house and look to both sides of the street before crossing to make sure there are no cars coming, even though it is a one-way street.

Do you not walk over grates on sidewalks for fear that you will fall in?

Yes. I only walk on grates that I have concluded to be safe after analyzing them for a few seconds before I step on them. Some of them you can tell that there is a 0% risk of them falling in.

Have you ever had your steering wheel come loose while driving, separating completely from the steering column?

I have.

Wow, I do the same thing. I look both ways on one ways too, because you just never know when someone will be going the wrong way.

I'm thinking of riding a motorcycle from California to Texas. Think I'll make it? What will happen if not?

I don't really know. I don't analyze other people's risks. The only thing I thought about your trip is that, even though you will not pass through NY (my home), your trip could unleash a series of events that would end up killing me, based on chaos theory.

I have.

Narrator: A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

Business woman on plane: Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?

Narrator: You wouldn't believe.

Business woman on plane: Which car company do you work for?

Narrator: A major one.
