ASII vs. generic stuff

I decided to give myself a couple Xmas presents, one of which being a new Alpha PAL8045 cooler.. but.. duh.. I forgot one thing. ASII! I do, however, have some generic goop that came with my "old" Soyo Dragon mobo. I plan on doing some light o/cing on my 1.4 t-bird and I was wondering how much of a difference there is between ASII and the generic stuff. Is ASII worth the wait for shipping and the 8 bucks or so, or would I be alright going with the generic stuff right now, being the impatient brat that I am. 😀
 
It's fine. I use generic goop even when I have ASII. You'll most likely experience 0-1 degrees difference from the ASII, 2 degrees if it just plain SUCKS. Just make sure you get some next time you have a chance, but don't go out of your way to get it; it's not worth it.

Your claims are based on what?? AMD socket-thermistor testing? Inaccurate testing Period... not opinion. If you go back to P3/Celeron 2 Internal diode tests, you see 2-6C Drops on 28-35W Processors. Wtih AMD processors going past 70W, this temperature drop "difference" increases as well.

Thanks for the input all. The Alpha went in flawlessly and I just used the goop that came with it this time. So, I have my Alpha on my new Shuttle.. only thing I change in the BIOS is my FSB from 100 to 133, and from there, I save settings, restart, and go to install WinXP. So, I'm getting halfway thru the part at the beginning where it's loading all the drivers, and the PC freezes.. I restart and I get no video signal, no beeps.

What I've tried so far...

1. Clear CMOS jumper
2. Start with bare essentials (CPU, video, 1 stick of RAM.. tried all four slots, then tried my other stick to make sure it's no RAM problem)
3. Start with different combos of hardware

All, no luck. 🙁 What basically happens is the PC seems to scan the IDE devices (I get the HD light on for a little bit), then...nothing. Any suggs? I was pretty darn glad I got it up and running the first time I powered up, but this is definately not a good thing...all I can think of is taking out my battery or something for a week and seeing what happens.. anyways thanks for all the help, this place is great 🙂

Make sure the PSU is connected properly to the mobo, if it's badly connected, the comp can work for a while but behave strangely.

Also, check the IDE cables, if those arent connected properly, the comp will give you a hard time.
 
I'm pretty sure it's not an IDE problem since I've tried booting w/o any IDE devices attached at all, and I got the same result, minus searching for the drives at bootup. I took your advice and checked the ATX connection and the other power connections, all of em seem to be ok. Everything powers on to the best of my knowledge, I get the leds, fans come on, etc.

Could I be clearing the cmos incorrectly? I checked the manual and I've done the following..

Turned PC off
Detatch ATX connector
Move cmos jumper to the clear cmos setting (2-3)
Keep it there for a few seconds
Move it back
Reconnect ATX power connection
Turn PC back on

That's basically what the instructions said and I followed em exactly.. I'm runnin' out of ideas here.. e-mailed Shuttle to see if they could help, waiting for a response.. I've never had this happen with a comp before, kinda weird. :frown:
