What's the deal? Are they the shiznit or just overpriced? They seem mighty expensive for being made in China...

Shrug, what model of Asics? My Brooks Adrenalines usually cost me about 100 to 120, depending on what sales going on at the time. Good shoes will carry a higher price than the standard crap at Walmart or Target.

They just make mostly higher end shoes. New Balance makes a range of shoes, but their high end shoes are the same price as ASICS.

I have a pair that have a softer outsole in the fore and aft foot, and a stiffer outsole in the middle - they feel awesome. Even though I have really bad plantar fasciitis, I can wear them all day with no special insoles.

you are looking at 2130's and above? Those are higher end shoes. Also, Asics are usually designed for pronators and such, so they specialized shoes. They are very comfy also.

I'm not looking at any specific models yet - just was browsing at DSW this afternoon and found lots of New Balance/Adidas/etc for $45-$65 (some 20% off, roughly) and all of the ASICS were $95-$130 and barely discounted at all. I'm not a huge runner but looking for a pair of that type of shoe for going to the gym, etc - trying to figure out if it's worth the extra cash for some comfort, support, durability, etc with them compared to any other brand.

Unless, you're going to use them for running then any model will do. If you plan on running, please go to a running store and get properly fitted.
