Asians: What kind of rice do you eat?

I eat Jasmine rice, but I think if sushi rice is cooked well, then it's really good...

Jasmine rice = thinner, drier, while sushi rice is a little fatter. By sushi rice Ido not mean that it is sticky, but rather the grain is the same type as rice used in sushi.

I grew up on sushi rice, but my parents never cooked it that well (Too much water I guess) and it left me a horrible impression of sushi rice, so I went with whatever my roommates cooked last year (jasmine rice).

Edit: Plain white rice can be either. They serve sushi rice as white rice at Korean/Japanese restaurants. They sell it at Costco too, and it's like Kohuko Rose or Nishiki. That stuff is sushi rice. Jasmine rice is the ones in the bags with all sorts of Asian languages (Thai, Viet, CHinese, etc)

Jasmine rice. I can't stand sticky rice (as in rice that's sticky, not "sticky rice" as in the type of rice).

It's not sticky rice. IT's teh type of rice you get at Korean/Japanese restaurants and some Chinese restaurants. Sticky rice is what you use for those rice balls, sushi rice is not sticky... it's only stick in sushi because you add water and vinegar so it's soaked in it.

I editted my 1st post to be clearer. But anyway, the fatter rice grains are stickier than the thinner grain type.

What about us white rice eaters? Asian supremacy?

No, I'm trying to poll Asians because I want to see which spectrum of Asians I lie within. Once you add non Asians, the polls become skewed. I imagine amongst Asians there will be more who eat sushi rice than non Asians

well you're right it's not exactly sticky rice. there are basically 3 kinds that chinese eat

1) jasmine- these are supposedly from thailand, they are not sticky and are sharp on both ends. they have a distinctive aroma when cooked

2) fat boy rice (that is how cantonese call them)- these are the sushi rice that you speak of. more stikcy than jasmine, and the ends are blunted compared to regular jasmine. they are more filling than jasmine. i think northern chinese/korean/japanese eat this kind of rice mostly.

3) sticky rice- these look like fat boy rice. they are sort of chewy when hot, and is all stuck together in a huge clump after they're cooled. chinese people don't eat sticky rice every day. it is the most filling kind of rice out of the three.

White rice is not the same as Jasmine rice.
Jasmine rice is actually referring to a very premium grade rice, but ppl miss use the term.

Those rices you buy at Asian groceries that say "Jasmine Rice", they are actually a mixture of cheaper rice and Jasmine rice. High quality Jasmine rice are really hard to find here in the US. I had them in Thailand.

I prefer Japanese rice over regular white rice, but I prefer real high quality Jasmine rice over Japanese rice.

Asians eat rice that comes in bags of 20lb or greater.

Smaller bags are either for everyone else or specialty (gluttenous... grammar check please)

True dat.
If your mom buys 50lb. sacks of rice, you must be asian.

BTW, these heavy sacks can be kept in the trunk of RWD vehicles for better stability.😀
Use when heavy bags of sand are not available.

I am white...but I love jasmine rice. I may be getting a lower quality version of it, but dang..its good. I cooked some the other day for my dad, and he loved it. It was the first time he had tried jasmine.

small bites of stuff for sticky like sushi is fine. eating a bowl? esp if hot since that makes it much stickier ...no thanks. just stuff gonna be lodged down your throat if you don't coat it enough sauce and stuff.

I usually eat jasmine rice.. rarely will I eat the sushi type unless it's in sushi or something.. I don't like the texture as much as jasime. That being said, I absolutely love broken jasmine rice.
