Our exchange student from South Korea claims that this type of thing is extremely common. Apparently, they all want to look like Americans and are willing to pay a lot of money for it. Even she wants to have the surgery done when she returns home. It's weird.

yep, it's all about double eyelids. some asians have single eyelids, having double ones make them more attractive. it started in the 50s when these asian girls wanted to impress american GIs.

double ones are thought to make your eyes look bigger and wider, more cute.
 
Some of them actually store packets of ketchup under their eyelids so if they ever forget to bring some to their table, they always have backups. Its tight cause you dont have to stand up and get more ketchup.

The whole American craze started in Japan with the rapage of their culture after WWII, and then countries like Korea, who often imitated Japan, join in.

Not sure if the same admiration is found in the youths of China though...
