Japanese and Chinese are mostly exempt, but Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Hawaiian... they've all got Macaroni Salad as an appetizer. Even if you don't order it! Am I missing something? Did the Duke of Macaroni save all of Asiandom and now you have to pay homage to his memory by serving it? Was it some kind of rebellious act because China said Macaroni Salad isn't cool? What? HELP ME UNDERSTAND BEFORE MY HEAD EXPLODES!!!!

*ahem*

That is all.

Umm . . . I grew up on Korean food, and I know how to make and love a lot of Japanese and Thai dishes as well. I've never used Macaroni in any of them . . . in fact I've never seen macaroni in them ever. Where is this?

in fact, i AM asian (vietnamese to be exact)... appetizers consist of like egg rolls, bowl of soup, spring rolls or something....never seen macaroni salad! although i do like the stuff.

Funny, 2/3 of those appatisers you mentioned are really french or portugese in origin ;) If it's battered or deep fried - chances are it's of french or portugese origin. Crab Rangoon and Tempura are the two big ones.

wtf kinda topic is this?

how about i start one titled:

Non-Asians: what is your obsession with Asian Style Cooking?

seriously, almost every restaurant you go to has some sort of Asian style food. some of the more annoying places i've been even suggest to me the asian style this or that. why the hell would i go to an italian restaurant and want to eat sushi/sashimi? or an oriental salad?

Having traveled around asian and lived in the mainland and currently live in Hawaii I can safely say this is primarily a trait of Hawaii's plate lunch culture. This is slowly carrying over to California and Las Vegas. Vegas primarily because of all of the Hawaii peeps that have moved there.

If you stay Vegas and like try sample some Hawaiian kine grinds den go Hotel California...

Well, there is always the issue of culture creep. In the last 30 years or so Southwest, California, Japanese, and Korean cuisine have all been intermingeling like crazy. The end result is you get two types of resturants - the staunch traditionalists - and then the 'california cuisine' type of resturants where who knows what you'll see on the menu. If this is a good or bad thing . . . I don't think I could live without sashimi salad with avacado and Korean Mung Bean Sauce. Some foods were just ment to be together - even if they grew on opposite sides of the ocean ;)

All the restaurants around here have very distinct menus. None of that crazy intermingling stuff :p

I only see macaroni salad in asian buffets. It is as out of place as with the pizza and the french fries in most of these.

okay, now i remember that at two weddings (twc-mc and jpn-twc), they did serve some sort of macaroni salad, also i have seen it at parties (twc)
so it may be a delicacy of sorts
either way, it's better than eating hog mog any day

I can't say I've ever seen that before...granted, I have much more Chinese food than anything else, but still, haven't seen it once.

Nope, I'm currently in the west coast and I've never seen macaroni salad served as an appetizer. Kimchi and miso soup on the other hand...

L&L in Vegas. It's Hawaiian, and as someone here posted Hawaiians apparantly have some obsession with Macaroni Salad. The other was Sun's House, on Maryland, which is Korean BBQ. And whatever the damn tasty all-you-can-eat Sushi joint in Vegas is. And that was the most Caucasian thing I saw there, aside from the sodas.

I've gone to Korean BBQ in the San Jose bay area as well; same deal. My friend tells me half the asian places he's gone to in the LA area also serve Macaroni Salad. Sure fits with that whole cross-culturalism theory.

hmm...I had never seen it before either, until recently. There's this Japanese dude by my office who makes and delivers homemade bento boxes for lunch, and they are definitely NOT americanized. Anyways, the food is always delicious and it almost always comes with macaroni salad. I thought it was strange at first, but I love macaroni salad, so I don't complain! :)

You guys suck. LOL!

It's a normal typical side dish served with plate lunches here in Hawaii. Nothing special. Damn why does it have to be a racial thing? And last I checked, Hawaiian's were Pacific Islanders. And Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, etc were considered "oriental".

And BTW macaroni salad with a bbq chicken plate from L&L is the shiet! Also try the chicken katsu curry, but with all rice. Good stuff!
