Asian-folk: What is your obsession with macaroni salad?

I've eaten a lot of food (both in quantity and type, thank you) and I've discovered some weird stuff in my day, but one of the damn weirdest things I've found is that Macaroni Salad is served as an appetizer for almost everything Asian. Japanese and Chinese are mostly exempt, but Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Hawaiian... they've all got Macaroni Salad as an appetizer. Even if you don't order it! Am I missing something? Did the Duke of Macaroni save all of Asiandom and now you have to pay homage to his memory by serving it? Was it some kind of rebellious act because China said Macaroni Salad isn't cool? What? HELP ME UNDERSTAND BEFORE MY HEAD EXPLODES!!!!

Nope, I'm currently in the west coast and I've never seen macaroni salad served as an appetizer. Kimchi and miso soup on the other hand...

you know, i was wondering the same thing, i work in the international district in seattle and a lot of the asian restaruants around here do that as well.

its bizzare.

I guess its just a cultural thing. Most american resturants (sp?) serve some form of potatoes with their meals (french fries, baked potatoes, hash browns, home fries, etc.). A lot of times soul food has some kind of macaroni or greens. It's just all cultural.

my guess is its just those asian eatery places you visit.. it must be their idea of 'westernized' appetizers they see fit, possibly in their best attempt to cater american crowd. and this is from a 100% pure home grown asian, dont remember seeing any of that macaroni action going on back home

Macaroni and Cheese does sound good... but the baked kind with some brown (not burnt) on top.

I don't think I've noticed the Asian macaroni salad thing. I always see it at the inexpensive white-people buffet places my mom loves so much, though. I figure it's just 'cause it's cheap and easy to make.

in fact, i AM asian (vietnamese to be exact)... appetizers consist of like egg rolls, bowl of soup, spring rolls or something....never seen macaroni salad! although i do like the stuff.

I have eaten tons of asian food, and I have never had macaroni salad as an appentizer before... maybe it's just the restaurants around your area...

I live in the North East USA and am a avid fan of Asian food, and have never seen macaronni salad servered. I have also spent servel months in Asia (China, Japan, Korea, and Singapore) and never seen in servered over there.

I don't know where you've been eating filipino food at but it smells AWESOME!! Being a Navy brat I lived around lots of filipina moms that would cook for anyone who stopped by. My first girlfriend was half-filipino. Her mom cooked for me all the time. Now I have a filipino sister-in-law and she makes all my favorites when we visit.

I have to disagree with you 99%, it's great smelling/tasting food. Aside from balut that is. :disgust:

I never see any macaroni salads at any of the Asian restaurants that I've been to and I have been to quite a few of them (Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, NYC, Florida, etc.).

The only place where they serve macaroni salad is at this hawaiin bbq place I go to called L&L. I've never had it elsewhere.
