Asian Americans most bullied in US schools

Asian Americans endure far more bullying at US schools than members of other ethnic groups, with teenagers of the community three times as likely to face taunts on the Internet, new data shows.

Policymakers see a range of reasons for the harassment, including language barriers faced by some Asian American students and a spike in racial abuse following the September 11, 2001 attacks against children perceived as Muslim.

"This data is absolutely unacceptable and it must change. Our children have to be able to go to school free of fear," US Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Friday during a forum at the Center for American Progress think-tank.

The research, to be released on Saturday, found that 54 percent of Asian American teenagers said they were bullied in the classroom, sharply above the 31.3 percent of whites who reported being picked on.

The figure was 38.4 percent for African Americans and 34.3 percent for Hispanics, a government researcher involved in the data analysis told AFP. He requested anonymity because the data has not been made public.
The disparity was even more striking for cyber-bullying.

Some 62 percent of Asian Americans reported online harassment once or twice a month, compared with 18.1 percent of whites. The researcher said more study was needed on why the problem is so severe among Asian Americans.

The data comes from a 2009 survey supported by the US Justice Department and Education Department which interviewed some 6,500 students from ages 12 to 18. Asian Americans are generally defined as tracing ancestry to East Asia, the Indian subcontinent or the South Pacific.

Officials plan to announce the data during an event in New York on bullying as part of President Barack Obama's White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Where was this study conducted? Kansas? North Dakota?

Fuck, around here whitey is the minority. Cry me a fucking river bitch.

Maybe the different ethnic groups just have a different idea about what constitutes bullying.

Modern kids think bullying is when you dont bend over backwards to accommodate all their bullshit demands.

Seriously though as spoiled and soft as the average American kid is these days I suspect verbal harassment probably qualifies as serious bullying. Not to mention overprotective parents who sue the schools at any hint of impropriety.

Why wouldn't they be considered Asian?

Unfortunately most Americans couldn't point out 10 states on a map of the US. Expecting these same people to know anything about Asia, other than "ching chong ding dong", is expecting way too much.

It's like saying Canadians are Americans as that's a insult to us true Americans. 😉

Reminds of when i was waiting in the imigration line in Honduras, and while the whale in front of me was fumbling for this passport, the agent asked him where he was from. "America." The look on the agents face was priceless.

Asians need to lift weights.

IF you are at least 5'11 and look like you lift then you most likely won't be bullied.

And how do Asian Americans have language barrier issues? They are from the U.S right?

Because despite wherever somebody came from or what they actually are, making up a PC term and attaching "American" to the end is the only acceptable way of referring to them.
Which possibly contributes to the pussification of America.

You hit that right on the head. Kids today are soft, real soft. I just laugh at the cyber bullying part. Its like what, BECAUSE SOMEONE TYPED SOMETHING IN BIG LETTERS THAT IS CAUSE TO BE AFRAID?

A couple things.

1. I'm tired of this whole "Asian" being used on 3/7 of the whole world population. Indians are not Asians, and in Texas, Standardized test scores for whites included Indians. Why? The Whites (in the school district admin) didn't want to seem as stupid. There are several different types of Asians, Vietnamese, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Thai, Japanese, Korean, and I'm sure there are a few others I missed.

There are Indians, and several different types of them: Gujarati, Malu, Bhiari, Kashmiri, Tamil, Maharastrian, Orissian, etc.

Islamic countries tend toward the differentiation between Sunni and Shia, but additionally they distinguish themselves by country at times. Saudi's and Iranians..completely different.

Now that you see that there are several different races (with significant genetic distinctions) you might come upon the error of this statement. They never asked who they were being bullied by. Because without a doubt, many "Asian" kids get bullied by other "Asian" kids. (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/81782118/)

That's not to say that there is not bullying from other "races" But in reality, this is far from a racial issue. It's just a continuing failure of our education system to teach tolerance and punish harassment. There are a lot of events that happened to me as a middle school student, that if they happened today, I would be pressing charges and suing over. And there are still about 10 people that if I saw them today I would laugh at them because they work at CVS, sell shaved ice...etc. One or two...I wouldn't mind seeing them dead, as they are useless members of society.

Today, it's a different story because as another poster said, I'm now 5'11" and work out and learned a few moves. (there were also 6th graders that were 6'2" and 200 lbs back in the day) But I'm also smart enough to recognize that size doesn't matter if a knife or a gun is on the other side (Yes I grew up in that type of "hood"). The same thing matters when we think about events like columbine and other tragedies. Some kids fail to realize that the kids they bully have access to guns. And well...that's understandable when you factor in that most bullies are below average intelligence.

What is my point?

We cater to dumb shits, and fuck tards all day long in our school system. And frankly, it's the worst thing our country can do. We need to be spending 10x more on smart kids than we do dumb kids, and be setting up environments for them to flourish instead of forcing them to compete in areas that don't matter. We also need to stop dancing around race as a "OH WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THAT" issue. Proper market research, psychological and statistical tracking will give us information to develop proper training and guidance for misguided youths, and separate those that will carry on the human race in the next generation.
