Asheron's Call 2, Anarchy Online, EverQuest, DAoC - which is better?

I'm thinking about getting an online game. I used to play Ultima Online, when it first came out (like 1997), but my computer was slow and 33.6 dial up was slower.

But now I have broadband and the rest of the summer to kill.

So, what's the difference between these games? Looking over the reviews, Asheron's Call looks the most promising.

Or if there's something better out there, please suggest it.

thanks

edit:
Just ran across Dark Ages of Camelot, looks promising.

I'd keep away from AC2. The player base is almost non existant from what I hear. If more people don't start playing, and I mean a LOT more, AC2 will probably be canned.
EQ is now over 4 years old, and starting to show its age. Its still fun, but the game isn't as enjoyable as it once was.
DAoC is a lot of fun, especially if you're into PvP. Decent graphics too.
Anarchy Online is also a lot of fun, but some flaws keep it from being the great game it could be. One of the best looking of the bunch, though.
Shadowbane is pretty bad from what I hear. I tried the beta and I couldn't stand the controls. It might be just what you're looking for if you want a full fledged PvP experience. The graphics are horribly dated.
SWG was just released and is being met with mixed reviews. If you have a fast PC, you might give it a shot, although it might be better to wait 6 months until more content is put in.

Umm... did I miss any?

I downloaded and played Anarchy Online tonight. Seems like a pretty fun game, but the controls are terrible.

Out of the bunch it looks like DAoC is the way to go. Although, I've hear that it's just a bunch of leveling up.

What's the story behind DAoC?

Thanks a lot guys.

DAoC is just constant (and poorly broken, from the guildmates I know who still play it) RvR (realm vs realm) after you level up to 50. No real dungeons IIRC.

Everquest is still going strong, it may be 4 years old, but it has 4 or 5 expansions, a lot of improvements, and you just can't get the same level of content from any other MMORPG. I actually just started playing again yesterday and I'm having a blast with my friends.

SWG is supposedly plagued by the same issues all MMORPGs are upon release...so I wouldn't go there.

Keep in mind EQ2 comes out later this year. Honestly, if you don't have a reason (friends there) to play a MMORPG, there's no rush. They can eat up some serious time and be stressful if you don't just hang loose with a nice group of people.

What he said!

How about trying the new Star Wars Galaxies or Planetside?
Both are out and are supposed to be pretty good MMORPGs.

Ya SWG works fine for alot of people and with that SW genre it will last I think plus it is beautiful.

DAoC my buddy likes better than EQ and SWG. But I didn't get into DAoC at all and now it is getting a bit old. AC2 blows EQ wanna be.

I wish I had time to waste playing MMORPGs 🙁

SWG looks good, but I don't want to spend $15 per month. And I really don't want to support anything that Lucas touches. Those new Star Wars movies are f*#king terrible.

I haven't heard of Planetside. Time to go looking for reviews.

Planetside isn't an RPG. Its more like Tribes/BF1942 in a MMO setting. If you're into team based FPS combat, it might be just the thing you're looking for.

And yes, any MMORPG is just a bunch of leveling up.

DAoC is a great game if you're into both PvE and PvP. However, i suggest you pick carefully on the server as there are many population imbalances. I'm personally on Palomides. Been there since 1 year+ and I hardly play now, only because I no longer have a guild to really settle in on.

After DAoC, I got into EvE Online. I loved playing the beta and its a great game if you're into Space Travel and everything involved with space exploration.. Although I do think that CCP (those who developed it) need to start working more on this game and boosting its content and such.

Right now I'm looking at SWG, only because I'm currently building a new system and I want a good game to come with it, and a LOT of my DAOC friends went to SWG. It looks detailed and complex and I know I'll like it. Its just a matter of time for me to get it really.

danny~!
