Hey all, I've been having an issue with Ashampoo Burning Studio 7 ever since I installed Vista Business SP1 64-bit. I attempted to burn a video DVD (with prepared VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folders) and it resulted in two coasters. ImgBurn 2.4.2.0 burned the DVD perfectly. I compared the two discs and it appears that the Ashampoo software did not write anything near the center of the disc, which explains why my DVD drive goes crazy trying to read it. I contacted Ashampoo and this is the conversation we've had so far:

Me: I recently upgraded to Vista Business 64-bit and can no longer successfully burn data/video DVDs using Ashampoo Burning Studio 7. I have tried other programs (BurnAware, ImgBurn) and they both work perfectly. My Ashampoo software is updated to the latest version. What do I need to do in order to get Ashampoo working? I can't afford to upgrade to the latest version.

Ashampoo: please try following steps:

1. Please open Start -> Run
2. Please enter "regedit" and then click to OK.
3. Locate following registry subkey and click to them with your mouse:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
4. Open the menü File -> Export
5. Enter savedkey as filename, and then click Save. That's a backupfile you can restore if necassary.
6. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type "UpperFilters" and delete the whole entry (if available). When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type "LowerFilters" an delete the whole entry (if available). When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Me: In UpperFilters I have "GEARAspiWDM", which is associated with iTunes 8 (64-bit). In LowerFilters I have "AnyDVD", which is associated with my AnyDVD software. By deleted both these registry keys, won't my iTunes no longer burn discs and my AnyDVD stop decrypting DVDs? If disabling two of my programs features (especially AnyDVD), fixes the burning issue with one program (Ashampoo 7) then I'd rather not use Ashampoo 7 anymore.

Ashampoo: somtimes there are compatibility problem which is the reason we recommend to remove this setting. Since those filter drivers are loaded also if you are using Burning Studio there, it seems that there is the problem.

Me: I understand about compatibility issues between programs, but I still have a few questions. First, neither AnyDVD or iTunes was running in the background when I attempted to burn a DVD with Ashampoo, so how could they interfere with the burning process? Not to mention the other two burning programs (BurnAware, ImgBurn) worked flawlessly. Also, I've had the same exact programs installed when I was using Vista 32-bit and I never had a problem burning with Ashampoo. This is why I thought there was an incompatibility between Ashampoo 7 and Vista 64-bit.

I just burned the same DVD with BurnAware and it worked perfectly as well. What could be going wrong with Ashampoo?

I'd hate to uninstall my paid version of 7 and downgrade to 2009 (gimped version of 8). Maybe I'll sell my license to a friend for $5 and just use BurnAware Free.

oops...its 2008 not version 8. But doesn't burning studio 2009 have the same features as Burnaware free?

I have the free Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009, but am still torn between installing it or the much regarded Imgburn. Any opinions out there?

I would recommend Ashampoo. I've been using Ashampoo's Burning Studio for quite a long time now (Burning Studio 8) and it's a very good.
