I started shoot the bull with a guy in line at the grocery store today, got on the subject of computer hardware and this guy claims that he read you can use auto anti-seize compound, the kind for head gaskets and brake caliper pins as TIM.
anyone hear this before or believe it?

well, you could in a jam probably because it's similar to AS5 with fine metal particles in suspension, but I wouldn't . it has a bunch of other stuff in there. I'd just stick to TIM made for computers.

You can use just about anything that fills the gap, as long as there isn't too much of it and it makes contact. You can even use WATER as a thermal compound... until it dries.

interesting read

Someone was joking around about using cake to clean their CPU with a few days ago...and I started wondering how frosting would do as TIM. What the melting point of sugar anyway? Can you say caramel ?

In a bind there's a lot of things that can be used as a TIM effective enough to run your system. The main design of a good TIM is stability over time. If the agent dries out temperatures will increase, for example.
