AS5 removal... Vodka?

I have a new HSF coming in the mail, and I usually get 100% rubbing alcohol for cleaning arctic silver off, but I don't have any chemistry department connections anymore to get the pure stuff. I do however have lots of vodka on hand, would it be safe to use vodka and a coffee filter to clean it?

Edit: all I have is 80 proof, which makes me hesitant.

DON'T WASTE THE VODKA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, drink the vodka, after you get back from Wal Mart, where you can buy 92% isopropyl alcohol for less than $1.

If its any of the following:

Smirnoff, Seagrams, Skyy, Trump - Go ahead and waste that garbage

But, if it is:

Grey Goose or Kettle One - DONT DO IT! Grab yourself a redbull and have a nice evening.

I am gathering from the replies that it would be safe to use on a heat spreader... I am lazy and would prefer to just use what I have here, I'll only use a few drops. I'm not one to waste my vodka!

Vokda is ~40% alcohol right? That won't really give you a good clean surface. The water will also take some time to evaporate.

Acetone ftw.

Use everclear instead if you have too =p

Yeah I would just use regular old 90% isopropl alchol....save your Aristocrat for drinking 😉

good god the bad memories of drinking Aristocrat vodka...

Procedure for using vodka to clean the heat spreader:

1. Go to Walmart and buy rubbing alcohol.
2. Use rubbing alcohol and a rag to clean heat spreader.
3. Pour vodka in a glass.
4. Drink vodka.
5. Breathe on heat spreader
6. go over the heat spreader one more time with the rag
7. Refill glass with vodka.
8. Drink vodka
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until bottle is empty.
10. Next morning, prepare and drink the coffe.
11. Around noon, install cpu on mother board (do not attempt this while performing steps 7 - 10).
12. Complete installation.

40% won't be very good at all. however, if you've got 190 proof lying around, which we did while helping to build my friend's pc, go ahead and use that.

Haha, finally, we have a definitive answer.😀

 I imagine vodka could be used, but there is better stuff to use and it's cheaper...
We have yet to hear what kind of vodka it is though.

How about this:
1. Drink the bottle of vodka.
2. Drive to Wal-Mart.
3. Buy some rubbing alcohol.
4. Drive back home.
5. Do the cleaning.

Haha, just kidding. Don't drink and drive!

1. Put Vodka in Freezer
2. Don't goto Wal-Mart instead goto some other smaller store because Wal-Mart is a joke
3. Buy teh rubbing alcohol
4. Get back home
5. Clean your CPU/HSF
6. Drink the cold vodka straight or with your choice of mixer

I don't have any chemistry department connections either; so when it comes to removing AS5 I get my 100% anhydrous isopropanol for $13 per liter at Micro Center.

Using vodka is probably a bad idea because if it's 80 proof, then it's 60% water. Everclear, OTOH might be acceptable 😎

wow $13 for a liter.....you can buy a liter+ bottle of 90% for $1.99......it isn't like you need 100% alcohol to clean the heatspreaders anyway.

This thread is full of win. 🙂

Except rating Grey Goose higher than Skyy, but Ketel one is the best.

I haven't used silver based compound in years either.

This isn't flavored vodka, is it? Do you honestly want your CPU smelling of peaches or whatnot?

No offense, but only sissies and girls buy flavored vodka.
