AS3, I think I love you...

I just got some Arctic Silver 3 yesterday, and decided to put some on my AMD 1.33TB rig. I cleaned the heatsink and processor core with rubbing alcohol, and applied the AS3 as per the instructions. When I started comparing before and after numbers with MBM5, I couldn't believe my eyes! This stuff is great! Why hadn't I bought some before now? Here I was, thinking all thermal pastes are more or less the same... Well, I can definitely say that they are not. AS3 rules! Using standard thermal paste and a pretty decent HSF (Swiftech MCX370-0A), my temps were 46C idle and, on average, 54C full load - from gaming (although temps did rise as high as 57C in prime95 torture test). After applying AS3, my temps are now 43C idle, and, on average, 46C full load - from gaming (temps no higher than 49C in prime95 torture test). I will never again install an HSF without my Arctic Silver. I am a believer!

P.S. I have an aluminum case and 3 panaflo L1A 80mm case fans, in addition to my HSF.

The change you noticed was probably more a factor of just changing the paste at all. After a while any h/s compound will migrate and/or cake-up to some extent and just reapplying it will give you a noticeable temp drop. Last time I reapplied my AS2 I got a 4 degree C drop. Older silicon pastes (i.e. Radio Snatch) are especially prone to caking up ...causing the temp to slowly creep up over time.
