i'm so damn excited right now. just bought a 4-month old canon 24-70 L from POTN. should be here in two days. was originally thinking of upgrading to a 50D first but read everywhere that glass before body is the way to go.

sure this might not be the best for a crop, but my plan is FF eventually...maybe a 5D classic in about 5 months...

i'm so excited i'm not even sleepy after lunch today...
 
Your camera is going to feel way imbalanced now haha, that lens is called the brick for a reason. Your 70-200 is going to feel light next to the 24-70 lol

Might want to get a battery grip for your XSi to help balance things out
 
yea i'm thinking i'll buy a grip to compensate...the upside is, i'll have a stronger left arm in no time.

More like stronger fingers because unbalanced weight will put so much pressure on your fingers(joints) rather the arm.

The notion "glass before body," makes perfect sense if you're using film cameras as no matter what kind of camera you may use, you could always pick the best film to match quality.
However, things are different in digital days. The sensor and image processing varies from a camera to other cameras; your good lens + bad camera might show worse IQ than worse lens + better camera.
Anyway, 24-70 is a sweet lens no matter what kind of cameras you use. With 5D, it'd be even better.

i imagine that would be true if you hold the camera with just the right hand all the time. with the left hand supporting the lens, i don't see how there can be much more pressure on my right hand fingers. simple physics.

that depends on what you use it for. I would take a 24-70mm f/2.8 over a 17-55mm f/2.8 because I would use the f/2.8 most for stage photography, where 24-70mm is the focal lengths that I tend to shoot at.

Since when is the XSi a bad camera in your opinion? A year ago you were touting it.

Weight issues aside, it'll be nice on a crop, but it just won't go very wide. A FF camera would make it wider, and would also allow you to use your 70-200 f/4 L in some more cases for the same reason.

At first, I was wondering where the hell you got the idea then I realized that I've made a big confusion on my end.

didn't mean 'your camera is Xsi and it's bad.' It was a way of speech as indicated by following sentence "Anyway, 24-70 is a sweet lens no matter what kind of cameras you use."

a 17-55 on a crop body vs a 24-70 on a full frame body are nearly the same.

that's a great lens- i have one on my 5d mkii 😀

From 400D generation onwards the difference is minimal in all but the biggest prints imo. Granted the newer cameras with more pixel density will let give you more freedom in cropping and camera speed 😛

I used a mates 400D with a 70-200 IS 2.8L! THAT was unbalanced.
