that can't be further from the truth. Grievers even gets help by the game's imbalanced classes that many times there's just no way to counter.

I played to level 33 on an athlon x2 3200+ and a geforce 7600gt... I get around 5fps in cities. lol I was actually enjoying leveling when I could see wtf was going on.

I just ordered parts for a whole new rig today, so I'll give it another go, but I don't foresee myself playing after I get to 80. The melee combat system is great in theory, and pretty fun in PvE, but for PvP its bad... Everyone just make a ToS I guess? I dunno. The game had (has?) a ton of potential...

Try Vanguard. Very deep "epic" style MMO. It takes a long time to level, especially in crafting and diplomacy. It's seeing a huge upturn since people are leaving AoC and coming back to Vanguard.

The maturity on PvE servers is undoubtedly much better than any other online game, MMO or not that I have played.

Possibly just a problem on the US servers because I have had no hassle on the EU servers.

Thanks to MarcVenice for backing up my statement.

I'm so glad I'm not into MMOs anymore.

Leveling is not difficult in AoC. I was level 50 when I quit 3+ weeks ago and I wasn't even one of the quickest levelers considering I have a normal life and actually had to be away from the game.

There were people level 80 before I was even level 50 due to pretty serious exploits in the game. It really is a shame.

Surprise downtime to fix a botched patch from the scheduled downtime. This weekly/bi-weekly patching schedule is ridiculous. Play-testing patches takes weeks on a public server, not days on a private one.

If you pick up EVE and don't like playing with others you might as well not pick it up. Most of the content is built for grouping even if you can do it with an expensive setup, or a raven LOL. PVP is 99% group work. If you DO solo PVP then and you excel at it then there is a 100% garrantee you just fought people who suck 1000% more than you. Good PVP that tones your skills and provides the most satisfaction comes from gang composition and flying into chaotic situations where you can smoke a cig afterwards.

EVE, like any other sandbox MMO, is all about who you play with. Most people who TRY to play EVE because they love the concept but keep coming back never truly start the game need to spend about 3 weeks patiently looking for a corporation of like minded people that are MOTIVATED. Once you do that, the game is something 99.99% indescribable by most of the people on Anandtech. There are a few people on anandtech that have absolutely no f'ing clue what EVE is and they've had subs off and on over the years. They didn't get it then and they don't get it now. To do that you need to become a cog in a PVP machine.

I can guarantee you won't have the free time required to play an MMO.

Problem solved.

33, happily married for 10 years. Great Job that pays alot, yet I do not have to put in alot of time.

So, been there done that. Life has come full circle.

Got time for MMOS.

And I have a house and money. Booya Grandma!

Ok well then get a console, Booya Grandpa! :D

I am in the same boat as Stumben and I have kid on top of all that. I manage to find time to play a variety of games including being in a top tier raiding guild in WoW (2 nights a week) as well as balance my time with friends and family so that everyone is happy. It really isn't the MMOs that are the issue. It's an individual's time management and their strange need to get the most done in an MMO as fast as humanly possible. I never understood that especially with the rate of content releases. Anyways, do not misunderstand me and think that I am taking offense or anything because that's not the case at all. I'm just trying to reinforce that MMOs are just a hobby like any other and even those of us with the busy lives can enjoy them to the fullest. :)

Welcome to playing a Funcom game. AO was the same way, back when.

Come back to Eve. The Shacknews corp just got into Factional Warfare for the Caldari this week if that interests you at all. Message me in-game if you go back. My name is Melke in Eve.

I think one of the biggest issues is that game devs and particularly publishers want a piece of the MMO pie so badly, but they are not willing to invest in it properly. One thing that separates the development of an MMO from all other game types is that in order to truly be successful you have to be ready and willing to dedicate a lot more time and MONEY before the release of the game as well as the patches that will be necessary after the release. I believe that the necessary investment that one must make has been underestimated repeatedly. It's a huge investment which means it is also a huge risk and I know that scares publishers and investors, but I am not a believer of doing something huge unless you are going to do it right. Short cuts do not work here. Being cheap doesn't work either. When your goal is to get millions of subscribers that pay a monthly fee you gotta be prepared to deliver the right kind of results. We want quality. Quantity alone is not going to cut it. Not in this genre. Not when we are paying monthly and that's the bottom line because Stone Cold said so. ;)

Haha.

Got a xbox 360. That is a Story in itself. What an excersise in frustration. cd read arrors GALOR on Mass Effect. RROD.. got it fixed. Seems to be working ok again but holding my breath a bit.

I play console for the sports games, my mood comes and goes for it.

I was just ribbing you out of jealousy to be honest.

I want to play AoC as my first MMO since I quit WoW acouple years ago but I know that my GF just isn't going to be ok with it.

My available time for gaming went from 20+ hours a week when we were not living together to less than 10 now that we are. Even getting that has caused a lot of tension, she just sees my rig or my PS3 as competition to her.

Anyways, kudos to you guys who have more understanding significant others, I think my prime gaming days are over,

Life goes in phases man, probably every 5 years or so it seems to take a drastic shift. My college days i had ton of time for gaming, as did I early on in my first Tech Job. Then as my career building got serious and was working my ass off.. a well as purchasing a house..I barely gamed for a good 5 years straight. Now I have settled in....I do not go out and party much anymore....I have more time for games.

Still much of that time could be better spent doing something a bit more active....oh well.

I look at life now - I just gonna do what ever I enjoy that doesnt get me in trouble.

think about trying city of heroes/city of villains?? it came out in 2004, a couple of months before WoW, and lots of things changed since then. did i mention villain epic archtypes?? 2 of them, and each one branches off to 2 different paths, so 4 new classes altogether. i would recommend "freedom" as the server since that is the most populated. also, all the missions are instances (is that a good or bad thing?)

no point in me rehashing how bad the game is, op can read my review elsewhere. the game probably need six more months of polishing... but it's a little too late for that with fierce competition coming soon.

talk about immaturity of the AoC community, just look at the AoC forum... fanboi versus haters, non stop. granted, it entertained me more than the game itself.

check out this gem from today

i am still enjoying the game. had to unsub for a week to take care of EVE life but resubbed today and started my mid levels again. if you come to aoc looking for solace from the mmo demons then you are out of luck. if you come to aoc looking for new content and a really cool combat system and pvp then you shouldn't be disapointed. now... if only they would make full corpse looting then it would be complete.

i did try to look for new content with AoC, it was good while it last... but to give back to the AnandTech community, here is one of the trick (working as intended) that people were talking about on the AoC forum (but promptly deleted and will probably get patched on the 9th)

1) Catacombs Bombing Run

goto Catacombs must be lvl 68+ so you can go thru trash mobs.

direction to first boss:
> go straight once inside
> take first left inside instance
> then go right inside this room
> then go straight and to the right in the next room and the boss in around the corner
> Agro boss
> run to the explosive barrels
> Kill two of the explosive barrels located near the boss (~1000HP) they will do 30k damage and basically kill all the elites and the boss in two hits

You will get 10s and this takes about 1.5mins to do and then you can reset the instance by inviting someone when you are outside the instance and just rezone in the group.

Don't try to kill the other two bosses as it'll take longer, with more risk.
You can make around 4g/hr of farming this boss over and over.

the barrels do a % based damage which kills the elites in 2 hits.

ok, i lied, more tricks thanks to mmo$##$.com

2) Make people say things script

/chsay %1 <a href="text://<a href='chatcmd:///chsay %1 IM A RETARD'>NO REALLY DONT CLICK ME</a>">DONT CLICK ME</a>

example of it in action

there's another script that would make people go /guildquit... but i won't post that... it's horrible and yet funny... depending on your point of view.

3) Instant Rez with no loading screen

This takes out those annoying loading screens when you rez. So for example if your fighting a boss and you die, you can rez but then have to wait through that little annoying loading screen, well this takes that out. As soon as you click rez, whether your resurrecting two feet or across the zone you will instantly be able to play.

1. Open up ?My Computer? TURN ON HIDDEN FOLDERS ? under ?tools? menu.
2. - For XP Users Goto: Documents and Settings\YOUR-USER\Local Settings\Programdata\Funcom\Conan\Prefs\Your USERNAME\Prefs_2.xml
- For Vista Users Goto: YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Funcom\Conan\Prefs\YOUR USERNAME\Prefs_2.xml
3. Open up the Pref_2.xml in Notepad, it?s a small file, 1 page. Near the bottom there are two lines, ?SplashScreenFadeInTime? and ?SplashScreenFadeOutTime? change both their values from 2 and 5 to zero.
4. DONE! Restart the game, die and rez instantly!

4) complete rare resource quest the easy way by buying it from trader
1. purchase 2 of the same [rare] item
2. put them in resource bag
3. Split them into 2 stacks (in the resource bag)
4. take one of them and move them into bank
5. take the one you just put in bank and move back into recourse bag (so you get 2x [rare] in 1 stack)
6. Repeat 1-5, because it only works if you redo it 2-3 times, weird but true
(also works for regular resource, but you must have the right amount of resource at the quest turn in)
