As I was driving home tonight...

I saw a billboard advertising the current Lottery money: $13 million. Why doesn't the lottery in all of the states donate money towards the hurricane victims in their time of need? It's not like it's going to kill anyone not to win all that money right now. Would it even be possible?

The money they make is already committed to different progams - senior health care, education, etc.

I'm talking about the actual money they give away to the person who 'wins' the lotto. Like just for the one time give away the winnings to the hurricane victims and not a winner. Unless you are talking about this too...

Not a bad idea. However It would not be legal, and I'm sure there would be some pissed off person trying to sue them.

Oh, you mean give away the prizes. Well, the people who bought the tickets might not like that very much. In effect, you would have the ticket buyers make an involuntary donation.

This is a good idea, but I'm sure if anyone of us won the lotto we would be thinking a bit different.... 😛

Yeah. I don't think everyone who buys the lotterybought the ticket with the intent of donating it all to the hurricane fund. Personally, I would be pissed off. Not that the money was donated, but I, gambled, won and came out empty handed involuntarily. I would donate some, but not all. Yeah, go ahead, call me greedy.

Well, in my scenario the donation of the lottery would be given BEFORE a winner was chosen. For example, if nobody one last night then there would be no drawing again tonight and whatever would have been won would go to the hurricane.

Just to clarify my 'story.'

If they did this, then the money that is "donated" comes out of our tax dollars, along with the $10 billion or so that's already been set aside from the government. Where do you think they get the money to pay off winners? By people buying the tickets, of course.
