As an Asian, is it my civic duty to watch Crazy Rich Asians when it's in theaters?

Maybe it was just your wording, but I mean, you can't blame the book. The book never once mentioned her as a white blonde American.

Same thing with Donald Glover's character, his character in the book was Indian.

Movie was still awesome though - just a different awesome from the book. Oh well. Still a great movie.

I’m not Asian but I took my wife to see it today. I’ve got one question. When some of the characters spoke English, why did they have a Texas accent? Do the words “howdy” and “y’all” have Cantonese origans?

To me the movie had a kind of Great Gatsby feel to it.

I say Howdy and Y'all. And I'm from Ohio.

Don't associate me with Texans. We'd both prefer you didn't. :p

I"m tired of seeing asian friends on Facebook promoting this movie and saying things like how they're so proud of this movie as if they played some part in the movie and its their civic duty to tell everyone to watch it so they can see them in the movie or something...

in ohio, it's "you guys"

I live my life how I want.

I vacationed in Myrtle Beach every year when growing up and picked up what I find to be superior shorthands, like "y'all".

Don't worry, I "ope" like the rest of us.

You mean the proper way ?

:D

Proper is Midwestern.

It's the official "American" accent/dialect of newscasters across the country. Can't beat that.

If they paid to see the movie, they did their part.

Why do you guys hate creating opportunities for your brethren so much?

Her ethnicity nor description was never mentioned in the book. Also, I had a high school chemistry teacher who's surname was Park, but he was white.
Also, that article is way too reaching. As an Asian, I feel this article is stupid. Those casting choices in the more more modern films are reasonable. Besides, a vast majority of GitS fans in Japan AND the CREATOR HIMSELF always identified Major Kusanagi as being white.. a shell she chose for herself. Same with Battle Angel Alita. Same with Dragonball. It's the abominations that is the live-action films of Attack on Titan and Full Metal Alchemists that are truly horrid (asians depicting obviously western characters).

Also, for Aloha, the director mentioned how he met a half-asian half-white girl in a bar in Hawaii, that looked VERY white; and he thought that was fascinating, so he made a character based off of that experience; and it had nothing to do with whitewashing. I had a college roommate who I did not know was half-Korean until his mom came over. He looked super white to me, and spoke Korean too (where the hell and why do you know Korean?! He responds, "uhh I AM Korean.." Imagine a white dude that looks whiter than a dude from Scandinavia suddenly telling me he's Korean lol).

holy crap i never even realized i say that, but just now realized i do!

it's like a shortened "oops" where the oo becomes oh and the s is dropped. i never thought about it as "ope", but that's what it sounds like.

did he inherit his dads eyes? i have a friend who is half-black/half-korean and he pretty much looks like his black dad, except he has his moms eyes so you i could visually tell he has some asian genetics.

Yeah definitely his dad's eyes. He has his mom's.... well I have no idea. He looked nothing like his mom. Except maybe blacker than black hair?
