As an Asian, is it my civic duty to watch Crazy Rich Asians when it's in theaters?

I think so, brb.

This is generating some buzz as Hollywood hasn't had an All-Asian cast movie since The Joyluck Club. I'm gonna sound like an asshole, but that movie stereotyped lots of Asians as these super-strict uber traditional blowhards riddled with mystic quakery. Also apparently everyone consists of war-ravaged sob stories full of estrogen overdosed teary drama.

I think this is a welcome second installment that's is a refreshing rom-com than a woe-is-me trope. I also like that it portrays Asians being wealthy as well.

I think any films celebrating a specific race is stupid.
Is it stupid as The Martian having this girl being 'Korean' in both in the novel AND THE MOVIE?

wtf...??

Anyway, OP, if you want to watch the movie, do. Or not. Up to you.

I usually only watch the big special-effects blockbusters in theaters. Which means, yes, I saw Transformers in theaters and waited for the DVD to see The Imitation Game and The King's Speech.

I totally agree. Movies also showing off some amazing CGI technical feat must be shown in cinema. Look at Gravity & Interstellar.

Wife and I watched Logan in theaters. We were so bz with kids that we haven't gone to theaters in many ears. Oh man that was just perfect. Although the film is just an Action/Drama, it was amazing to feel the emotion on the big screen.

If my OP wasn't clear, going to watch Crazy Rich Orientals is to support the box office as a fellow Asian American.

I read Joy Luck Club as part of a women's studies class (I almost finished all the requirements of a women's studies major; surprise P&N assholes!). That shitty movie changed every negative white male character in the book into Asian characters instead. For example, the cheap Jew in the book was switched to a cheap Chinese man in the movie. All non-Asian male characters were shown in a positive, sympathetic light while they dumped on all the Asian males.

I once got out of a speeding ticket with a Chinese-American cop by chit-chatting with him about my hatred of Amy Tan and the Joy Luck Club movie. :D

Whitewashing I too have a problem with it. But a movie selling jokes by stereotyping asian americans is just making money at the expense of asian americans; it's not solving the problem.

I think Daniel Wu having a non-stereotype role in tomb raider was a bigger and better step.

I have Austrian/German heritage. Thank goodness I don't look to films or entertainment in general to validate myself or my identity or I'd be shit out of luck. I seriously cannot remember the last positively portrayed German character I've seen.

I approach it with humor. I love films like "The Big Lebowski" despite its awful depiction of negative German stereotypes. They make me laugh.

And what about Slavic people? Holy crap - talk about getting the short end of the stick. What are they good for besides being hookers or cannon fodder for Bond films?

That's not an Asian thing, that a not being a slob thing!

:p

It's actually funny - all cultures are so different. As far as what's considered being a slob....

As far as taking off the shoes goes - my wife is Latin and comes from a culture where floors are considered dirty, so you should always keep your shoes on. No joke.

I mean, it's similar to Asians that drink directly from a bowl - most other cultures would call you a slob for that.

Maybe her floors are dirty because she walks over them in her outside shoes all the time! :Colbert:

Depends on the bowl. Let's face it a mug is just a bowl with a handle! :D

Well, luckily other Asians are holding down the fort and it looks like CRA is going to drop a mere ~20% in it's 2nd frame.

I’m not Asian but I took my wife to see it today. I’ve got one question. When some of the characters spoke English, why did they have a Texas accent? Do the words “howdy” and “y’all” have Cantonese origans?

To me the movie had a kind of Great Gatsby feel to it.

They probably learned English in Texas, and learned to speak it that way. From Texans.

I dunno. It wasn't my civic duty to watch the crazy rich white guy until he became President. And I still don't do my civic duty. :p
