As a practical economy car - Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic?

I've never ridden in one, but I hear that the seats in the corolla aren't very well designed, and if you ride in one long enough, your butt will start to ache.

<< vw are german designed..but built in mexico. >>

I beleive the TDi's are assembled in Germany.

<Thats anything about HONDA, they only recommend to use regular gas. Though I still recommend putting super in like once every 2 or 3 months just to clean up the lines and stuff. >

Preludes take super or 91 octane only. I believe it is the same for all their VTECs too.

Not the Passat or Golf. At any rate, the Mexico plants are supervised and run by German management. Or are you implying that Mexicans are somehow genetically inferior and cannot assemble a car properly?

Here's a site that has summaries of a whole bunch of "economy sedan" comparison tests and links to those available on the web. Link

Two things:

I have a 2001 Civic. VERY nice. WOuld strongly recommend it. A friend has a new corolla. Nice and tight, but I wouldn't take it over a civic any day of the week. No way in hell.

And now: 90 degree turn at 35+ MPH? WHAT THE FSCK ARE YOU SMOKING? You've never done that in any car, I can boldly proclaim right now. It may sound OK to you right now, but next time you are taking a 90 degree turn, take it REALLY FAST. --SO fast you think you're gonna crap your pants. --And look down at your speedometer. I think you'll find you're not going nearly 35.

<< . . .VWs have really been holding their value in the last few years. Just look at the price of used Jettas and Passats. . . >>

That's only because they're extremely trendy as new cars right now. That drives up the resale value immensely. I don't think their quality is up to par with the other German cars available here yet, namely Mercedes and BMW. Look at the latest owner reviews on carreview.com. Many negative comments (paraphrased, I suggest you look for yourself) such as "looks great, when it's in my driveway, instead of the shop," and "I've had my VW for 10 months and totaling service receipts, it's been in the shop about one month," and "service department always booked solid for a week in advance" don't make me think that the trend will last much longer.

<< Preludes take super or 91 octane only. I believe it is the same for all their VTECs. . . >>

True of the Prelude, not of the Civics. The (US) Civic EX and HX each have different VTEC engines, but are designed to run on regular fuel.

Anyway, I like the Civic. I am a longtime Honda fan. You won't go wrong if you prefer the Corolla. I assume you will have driven them both before you decide. Make sure you like the service department, because in the long run, they will determine your level of satisfaction with the vehicle long after you've forgotten the salesperson's name.

Good Luck! 🙂

EDIT: I should not have said the only reason VDubs are holding their value well is because of trendyness, I should have said it is one reason.

That's entering the turn. Obviously most cars can't keep that speed up all the way through. But I'm glad that you take these forums so seriously. You make it sound like I was insulting your mother, instead of a piece of metal and plastic. May I suggest a walk outside to remember that life does exist beyond the internet.

I like the Corolla. Even though I own a Honda, I also have a '00 Corolla and I like it. The engine is quieter, the ride is smoother, the brakes are tighter. But it's a little cramped if you're tall. 🙂

<< But I would take a Sentra or Protege over either of them. >>

I second that opinion. We have both those cars, and they are both good cars. The Sentra is better IMO, but the Protege was in a minor accident recently and we are noticing many rattles, so i can't commend on the build quality of it.

Wait a couple of months for the SE-R or the new protege (mp3??).
