that my CC info be deleted from a merchant's database?

i would feel so much better if i knew that my cc info wasn't floating around at every merchant (online or B&M) i ever purchased something.

This could be after the dispute period was over - let's say after 60 days, they would be required to delete my cc info.

You signed up for the terms when you signed your cardholder agreement.

Stop being paranoid, you're not liable. I don't care who has my number.

Don't expect to get that right anytime soon if ever. These companies protect their data and let me emphasize that it is their data even though it contains your CC info. They own it. The odds of anything bad happening are slim unless you do a poor job protecting your own computer. Regardless, you aren't liable anyways.

Also, just so you are aware, most online stores do not store your CC data in their database anymore. They don't need to. All they need to do is send it off to get it verified and complete the transaction which doesn't take long at all and they do it on the fly so that they never need to store it.

you have the right to demand it. does not mean you are going to get it. if you do not want them having it use cash.

i heard amazon stores everyones information on an offline server

If someone misuses the number just cancel the card, claim your money back, and get a new card with a new number.

Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

I don't know how Amazon works exactly, but I know that they are one of the online stores that saves the CC data. A good way to tell if your data is being saved or not is if the site has a feature which can automatically pull up your billing and CC information after you make a purchase so that you don't need to type it in next time. This is one of the few reasons why some online stores still keep that data around. They tend to be the larger stores though which have the cash to buy a very efficient security system. They usually give the customer the choice if they want their info saved or not during the checkout process which is nice.

Just use a virtual credit card
this would solve the OP's problem. i only use virtual credit cards online.

Who offers these?

So far, I've seen them offered by my citibank mastercard, my discovercard, and my bank of america (formerly mbna) visa. Anytime I buy online, those are the only cards I use.
