ok, basically, i was playing a pile of games for a while. then i load far cry, the first level, play for 5 minutes then go down for dinner. I come back, and there are artifacts all over the screen. I quit the game and the desktop has artifacts too. i reboot, still artifacts. i load ut2k4, i can barely play cos i can't see anything, all the textures are stretched all over the place, and half the time the screen gets "chequered up" into red squares and what should be displaying. I'm running an x850 xt pe at stock, a 3200 XP at stock, 1 GB crucial ram at stock on an msi k7n2 delta-ILSR.

also, i was running farcry before and nothing has changed hardware wise or driver wise since i played it last.
what do i do now? is it my graphics card maybe? i've never had problems before the card is less than half a year old

Your video card is still pretty "young", but they can break down too... I would RMA it, if it wasn't a problem before, or you haven't changed the cooler or tried to reseat it, it will be your graphics card vreaking down...

Nasty truth, but it could well be...

yeah i haven't done _anything_ to it at all since installing it, apart from swapping the previous 512 RAM with a pair of matched sticks to make 1GB. but why would it just suddenly break while its running farcry?

Any other suggestions at all though? in ut2k4 the textures are all stretched and i get little blips of weird stuff and the chequered red thing happens, but all the weapon firing effects display normally, when they aren't obscured by a floor texture thats decided to stretch to the ceiling. also it runs just fine, its only the graphics that are messed up

Artifacts can be a heat issue... You could check your temps... Because Far Cry is quite graphically intensive...? :p lol

If you want to stress your VGA to the max and get the highest temps possible, try RTHDRIBL...

After a couple of minutes, it'll already have reached it's top temperature... Tell it...

EDIT: Try clocking it back by some 30MHz on the core and see if the artifacts still happen...

nah i very much doubt its a heat issue, i held my hand behind the exhaust and it is barely warm

With the famous words of Dr. McCoy:

It's dead, Jim.

Any component can suddenly die, doesnt happen often, but it happens. RMA it.

if the HSF isnt making good contact it can kill the chip and it won't feel very warm at all...
I bought a X800pro for my cousin and the first one came with the HSF on crooked and it artifacted like hell even in the BIOS. I RMAed it and the next came working perfectly.

You can try remounting the HSF if you want to see if that helps.

bah i've now tried out my card in another computer and it seems to work fine, although this computer only has 1.3 Ghz and I haven't got any games on it to test it properly

Sounds like either heat, or your powersupply, and my money is on the powersupply unless you need to do some housekeeping in your case.

the power supply should be fine its a qtec 400W dual fan PSU. Also, when I tested the graphics card in the older computer I used the PSU from my good computer, because the PSU from the old computer sucks

Did you try updating the drivers? I would RMA it if that doesn't fix it. It's most likely a heat peoblem.

99,9% RMA time...UNLIKELY a driver issue.

Especially at stock there should not be artifacts.

Had a X850XT like that before, RMAed it and now this one is fine. RMA as long as you can.

Stern,

i have the same set up as you and im suffering the same issues... battlefield 2 im getting major graphically issues, the soilders and trucks have big spikes and stuff they strectch up to the skys and the beachs reach all out to sea etc...

Also the same with NFS Most wanted, the tree strech all across the roads! making it impossible to see... BAH!!!

ive tried new drivers, cooling, the card runs at 62 underload...

i think ati just aint compat with the board mate, have you solved your problems yet?

I ran the light demo link thing that some one posted and this works a treat no problems, i only seem to suffer problems in games... Doom 3 plays great with very very small glithes on the face of the person im playing . Counter strike (orignal) i get the old green and purple patchs... weird..

I would post some photos, but im not sure how to do that here, any help so at least you can see what im on about! lol

Oh and by the way, im new here! Hello all. =)

I had a thermaltake 430W and my FX55 and X850XT were overloading it, because it's not a high reliability PSU like OCZ or ANTEC. If your PSU came with the case or something I'd suspect that. Mine ran fine for a month or so, but as soon as I OCd a touch it started locking up and artifacting and going to the color grid screen (freeze). I bought an OCZ 520W which is rated for higher temps and more stable, and instantly I went from common lockups, to none at all. Yes I believe my card was damaged, but the PSU change fixed everything except that I still can't OC at all without artifacts. I'd reinvestigate the PSU capabitilies bro.

Someone else did suggest that, im running a 450w qtec (gold) psu with 2 dvd drive 2 harddisc a k7n delta-l mobo 3200+ amd and 1 gig ram and the x850xt PE AGP...

Ive done a temp test , under load with need for speed at full res etc, the card reaches 71c and the fan does not speed up, i get the glithes at around 60c so i will invest in new psu and some better cooling i think... good idea?

PS thanks for help mate... im rather new to all this stuff.. cheers.

still having BIG issues with Battlefield 2 to the point where the textures are that corrupt i can see the screen or where im going! HELP!!! :-(

PS forgot to say, artifacts are only in games no where else... =)

Install ATI tools

Set the fan speed to 100% once it reaches 50c and see what happens

If you are artifacting, I would suggest RMA it. My x850XT PE came borked, artifacting even in the BIOS eventually. It gradually got worse. The speed on the fan doesn't go above 5% stock, so you'll overheat playing games often if you don't fix that too. Use ATITool to change the fan speed. Keep it below 72 degrees.

Stern, my x850XT PE came like that, you just need to RMA it. The longer you wait, the less time you'll have to enjoy the new one :p
