Article posted on VIA's VIA Envy24 sound card

My Midiman Audiophile 2496 uses the Envy24 chip... this is good stuff. Except the Midiman seems to have much better DAC quality, benchmarked at ~96dBA instead of ~90. However, the Terratec actually has DirectX drivers... while I'm forced to switch to onboard AC97 for games.

Direct X comes with a utility called Direct X diagnostic tool which allows you to test for compatibility. in video sound etc. To my delight, the Terratec DMX 6 Fire was 100% compatible with Direct X. It passed all tests.

Drivers are looking good.

And the review on sound quality etc was excellent,so looks like another awesome sound card coming our way 🙂.

Check out the price on this sucker, though--retail $499, online $289. The Envy24-based Audiophile2496 is found for retail $229, online around $179--probably since it doesn't have Terratec's breakout box.

The only serious advantage of Terratec is DirectX support... Midiman lacks it, and can't be used for games.

I wonder how affordable the chip is? Imagine if this was the standard integrated audio on VIA based motherboards...

Hmmm...

that was the first thought that came into my mind when I read the title, but damn.... that looks like one sweet card

And here we go with the Via sucks crap again...too bad..it only took a few posts for the Via crappers to start this thread on the way to a Via sucks argument...oh well...🙁

Insane3D,

Looks like they`ve been on the Pabster training course 😉,anyway it`s another sound card in the market which means more choices for us 🙂.

ummm, cause they do 😀
I only say that because over the past few years, I consistently have had more problems with Via products than anything else I have used. Sb problems, KX133 (pos), Via 4in1's crapping out system builds. Lets face it, Via is the 'Kmart' of the computing industry. Their products consistantly have problems, their support is suspect, and it only took Nvidia 1 try to match and in some cases exceed Via in its own hallmark industry, chipsets.
But i digress, this soundchip looks like it has some potential. Good luck with the drivers 😀😀😀

4-in-1's crapping out systems?? PUHLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

SB LIVE problems??? Wasn't even VIA's fault. Even the i815 had problems with it.

KX133. I had a KA7...worked just great.

KT333 is still faster than the nForce and KT266A was about the same speed as nForce.

my msi KT266a board has been running solid for months.........built 2 other systesm with the shuttle ak31a and had the same success..........sounds like your probs are user errors (installing 4n1's isnt rocket science 😉)

btw.......ill admit earlier via chipsets were crap......but the KT266a/kt333 are rock solid products.

Every other couple of times I install the Via 4in1 drivers on anything but the latest incartion of the Via chipsets, they have various problems. Go take a look at the Via website, they offer a whole bunch of older versions of a set of drivers which is supposed to be backwards compatible with their products, I wonder why? I will admit, I have not used the latest 266a or kt333 incarnations of Via chipsets but I understand they have improved.

KX133. I had a KA7...worked just great.
Hmm, the reason I pointed out the KX133 specifically was its inability to support the slot a thunderbirds while the much older AMD 750 chipsets could. That was a joke.

Exactly, Via who has been manufacturing Chipsets for its main bussiness for years, is getting pushed by a company which designed its first chipset core logic.... Do you think Via could match Geforce 4 Ti4600 performance on their first try if they decided to make Video cards.

Also, it will be very interesting to see what the new Nforce will do. I have a feeling Nvidia is going to edge out even the Kt333, but we will see 😀

What I get with my usually get with a VIA chipset is crappy audio, realtek LAN, usb that doesnt work right, IDE controllers that think everything is a scsi drive and refuse to implement dma properly. 4in1s that NEVER install properly, not to mention a few other drivers that are always unclear on whether they should be installed. I get problems with sound cards, low memory performance, and just plain instability.

What I got with my nforce is pretty much the total opposite. Same with any intel board I've ever owned.

VIA doesnt have a bad reputation for no reason you know. While some people may get lucky and have no problems, that doesnt mean other people wont, and that doesnt mean everyone else is doing it wrong. And if for the people that do do it wrong, maybe if they made it a lot easier to do it right to begin with, people wouldnt be complaining.

Besides, what does the KT333 offer over the nforce? More memory bandwidth? What use is that to the athlon?

go to newegg and look for Nforce board without onboard video.....you get 2-3...now look for KT333 boards......you get 2 pages dont you?😉

I've been burned by VIA FAR too many times to ever buy that brand again no matter how good it's supposed to be. Fool me once...why did I let you fool me twice...third time I'm an idiot NEVER AGAIN!

Hey Brandon, maybe you could edit the title of this thread to something like...

Latest Via sucks thread, please come in and tell us how Via is worse than Satan...

I still think we need a dedicated forum for this... 🙁

Actually, it did work with the Slot A Tbirds, just ones over 900mhz caused trouble. Yeah, stupid Via, not supporting a CPU that the original chipset was not designed to support....

And we all know how popular the Slot A Tbirds were...

Just curious, if not for Via's KT133 and KT133A chipsets, just what would we have used those brand new Socket 462 Athlon's in? An AMD 750 board? We would all have just used the 750 with classic Athlon's until the 760 came along?

WOAH. Seems like they really overdid themselves now. Sure, the specs look great (didn't see anything about Sensaura or A3D though), and that 20-band equalizer is awesome...but wow, that is sure a heck of a price. Maybe a "lite" version, without that snazzy breakout box.

There is an LT version that sells for around $150. Instead of the breakout box it has an extra back plate like the original SB Live! that has TOS I/O and mono mic in.

From what I remember, the KT133 was NO different than the KX133, except Via was kind enough to offer support for the new thunderbird proccessors, what a treat. So essentially, they fixed the KX133. Possibly, we could have used the brand new socket a athlons in slotkets in our older kx133 boards.
