They are common even in $50 mutts. Almost every humane society on the planet and most pet stores have microchip scanners. There's a whole industry of microchips and competition among formats and everything. It costs < $100 to get one and is painless.

Yea, $1600, big deal... I thought all puppies form pet stores are priced in that range. A microchip implanted in the dog though?

What happens once the dog is purchased? They take it out right there in the store?

They give the ID of the chip to the new owner, so in case anyone ever finds the dog (it gets lost or something) they can scan the chip and find out who the owner is.
It's basically a small, electronic license plate.

Does the new owner have the option to have this chip in his/her dog?
