Yea, $1600, big deal... I thought all puppies form pet stores are priced in that range. A microchip implanted in the dog though?

They are common even in $50 mutts. Almost every humane society on the planet and most pet stores have microchip scanners. There's a whole industry of microchips and competition among formats and everything. It costs < $100 to get one and is painless.

Both of our cats from the local humane society are chipped. It's standard procedure for all pets adopted there.

They give the ID of the chip to the new owner, so in case anyone ever finds the dog (it gets lost or something) they can scan the chip and find out who the owner is.

It's basically a small, electronic license plate.

No, they leave it in, but change info, like your address ect so they can find you if they find the dog.

They don't take the chip out, they just update the info that's stored on it to reflect the new owner. That way if the dog runs off any place can scan the chip and they can call the owner to let them know they found their dog.

No, they leave it in so a shelter can identify the dog if it's ever picked up by animal control.

All my cats have them. The sad part is I dont know if any animal shelters will check for it or if they do if they will find it before they decide its a stray and put it down.

Pretty common, most vets offer it, I got my two kitties from the pound and they were tattooed though.

It's not like they are going to take it out for you. But why wouldn't you want it? It's a good thing, it can help get your pooch back if they get lost. Our cat had one put in by the rescue place we got him from, then I had to go to a website to register my name, address and phone# with the ID tag. He wears a tag on his color that says he has a chip.
