Article: Five reasons not to buy an iPod

I am not slamming the Pod here... I think it's a great product but here is an article on alternatives....

"For the past year, the media has been clamoring about iPod killers on the horizon--new MP3 players with more features, longer battery life, and designs nearly as svelte as the iPod's. However, this oversimplifies the situation; in truth, while the iPod rocks, it's not now, nor has it ever been, perfect for everyone. "

I agree with the battery life and the money arguments but then again the whole article is pretty weak. For exercising (jogging, whatever) the iPod is pretty darn stable. I've been running with it for nearly a year and it's never skipped except for when I tried to clip it to my belt. If you hold it/secure it then it's fine. Also, one of the big selling points of the iPod was that you didn't have to carry around the cds and a MP3 player. The iPod alone is smaller than the player.

About the hq recordings, eh, that's really a niche thing within the MP3 player market. I don't think many people would take that into consideration when buying an mp3 player. Also, who wants WMA files anyway 😛

Thanks for the link dnugget.

Reason #6 - can't be used as an automobile jack stand nor an ice scraper

Whats with "can't run with it"? I know plenty of people that do. " Some experts say that it's impossible to damage the drive in this way, but I'm not buying that" Doctors say the cancer might kill me, but they're only experts, what do they know......

I wouldn't call WMA exactly having a better choice either.

Seems like they were trying pretty hard to scrape something up for a story here.

1. Six-plus hours of battery life is not always enough : damn, who listens to 6 hours of music without being able to charge?
2. 1. Six-plus hours of battery life is not always enough: glad i dont exercise
3. The iPod is expensive : buy refurb
4. You want to make high-quality digital recordings: how many of us are planning on doing this?
5. You want a choice in online music stores: itunes is prolly better than all of them

the only thing i would consider over an ipod is the Zen just cause the 20 gb model can be had for ~$220

My only issues with iPod are:

Price. I make money - but I also spend it fast. Somthing that's small enough to lose should not cost that much money. My flipphone is bigger than an iPod and cost less.

COLOR! Omfg white is so lame. I can't even begin to express my hatred for the whiteness of it. It doesn't match any electronics that I own except a few random PC cases that havn't been switched to black yet and, of course, other Apple products. Give me a black iPod, Apple, and I will take back some of the nasty things that I said about the G5 (But not all of them).

I was deciding between the Zen and the iPod, and chose the iPOd because the Zen even dwarfs my 40GB 3G iPod (which is about 3-4mm thicker than the 20 and 10GB models). Also, I tested my battery yesterday, this is my result:

Fully charged battery, EQ off, backlight off, 160 kbps encoded mp3's, battery lasted for 8 hours and 6 minutes without stopping. I plan to re do the test with the EQ set to rock. Also, does anyone think that AAC is worth it over mp3? I have all my CD's encoded at 160 kbps mp3, and wanted to know if I should re-encode as 128 kbps AAC, or 160 kbps AAC, or if I should just stick with my mp3's?

i thought the zen was supposed to be very comparable to the ipod in size?

Not the one's I held in the store. It was significantly larger (well not terribly larger, but not as comfortable in the hand), and weighed a bit more. I found the 40GB iPod to fit perfectly in my hand, and to be a very acceptable weight. The Zen was too big for my tastes, and weighed a little to much for me.

Oh, and on the shock proofing thing - even the oldest of IDE harddrives are rated to somthing like 20 G's (i.e. a deceleration of 196m/s^2) in operation. The smaller parts of the micro-IDE drive in the iPod actually increase the shock tolerance, because there's less mass involved, so the force involved in a 20G deceleration would be much less (Remember, force=mass*acceleration). I'd estimate that the micro-IDE drive can actually handle the 10,000G impact (98000m/s^2) rated for normal IDE drives in storage mode. This is the equivalent of falling.... A longass way.
