How necessary is artic silver for say an athlon xp 2000+ (1.67) and how do I install it and how hard is it to do?

Good thermal compound with an XP is a must, as is a good HS/F combo. As to the application of AS just read their INSTRUCTIONS, it's very easy but follow the directions carefully to ensure best results 😉

What is really necessary is a copper-base heat sink and a high cfm fan. You can basically use any thermal compound.

That is true, but with ASIII it will normally drop 2-4C from most white grease or thermal pad.
