I accidentally got some artic silver on my cpu, not the rectangle core in the middle but a little bit around the core, just wondering if that is going to effect anything, i am pretty sure it shouldnt be anywhere but on the core, if anyone knows how to get it off easily without damaging the processor let me know....thanks

stick it under the faucet and clean it gently with some dish soap then reapply

Next time lay some Scotch tape down alongside and up against the 4 sides of the core. If you're an extremely sloppy klutz, add more tape until the entire top of the CPU is covered except, of course, the core. After applying the AS and getting it all over everything, gently peel the tape off and you will have a perfectly clean processor that doesn't require any cleanup. I don't know why the AS instructions on their website don't suggest this. This seems to be one of those common problems that can be so easily avoided by adding a mere 30 seconds of labor to your assembly time.

Scotch tape carries a lot of static electricity, I don't think I want it around my CPU.

I did the same thing with my Duron 700mhz. I cleaned it off with some Qtips dabbed in alcohol, and its been working fine (and overclooked) ever since.

I don't see why it's such a big deal to avoid getting it on nothing by the core. When you apply the hsf, most of it's going to squeeze out anyway. As long as you don't apply an excessive amount, I don't see any problem. Am I missing something here?
