For those of you who have been following my cooling saga, I want to say thanks to all of you who have been providing suggestions, links, and advice.

For historical purposes I am using an Athlon XP 1800 with a Swiftech 370a and some Thermal Paste that came with the HSF, that claimed to be silver based.

Anyhoot, that combination yielded numbers I was not very happy with (all readings are with 1 side of the case off and no case fans):

43.5 - 47 at normal or some what idle load

With the case door on I was getting 50-51 degrees.

Well I have on order (it will be here tomorrow) 2 80mm Panafalo Case Fans and today my tube of Arctic Silver II arrived. Well I applied the Arctic Silver after cleaning the HSF and CPU, and I am AMAZED at the difference:

With case door off and no case fans:

37-38 idle/normal load
40-41.5 max load

I am just amazed simply amazed at the difference.

Thank you all.

I got a reduction of about 5 degrees when I applied ASII, I think I would of got more but I had already applied the standard stuff to the HSF and getting it totally off without lapping is very difficult.

I was using the Circuit works silver paste. Cleaned everything meticulously and installed ASII.
Dropped my temps only 1C, but everybit helps.

5degrees? Is this a comparision between the same heatsink with all factors being the same except for thermal paste?
