This might sound a little stupid, but how do you apply the as on the 1.6a? Do I spread it evenly over the entire cpu or just a section of it? Thanks

arctic silver's website has the best explanation for it.

Basically you want to apply a very thin layer bit onto the bottom of the heatsink where the heatsink will make contact with the CPU (about 1"X1", a bit bigger area). Make sure the heatskin has no thermal pad or tape or whatever on it; if it's there then clean it off and then wipe the HS with some rubbing alcohol (make sure it has time to evaporate). Spread the AS over where the CPU will make contact with the Heatsink with a very thin blade, like a razor or even a credit card. Then put a tiny blob on the core and spread it over the core's heat spreader - the large metal square. Make sure the AS is only on the CPU core and none comes off the sides or anything. Don't worry if any gets into that hole in the CPU heat spreader.

Hope this helps (read Arctic Silver's site for the best explanation!).

Edit: It is also recommended to "rub in" the AS into the heatsink before you install it. What you want to do there is the first time before you're going to use the Heatsink, put a small amount of AS onto the heatsink bottom. With your finger inside a plastic bag, thoroughly rub the AS into the heatsink as much as possible. This should discolor the bottom slightly (you want this to happen, its filling in the microsopic pits in the HS). Then clean off the Arctic Silver. What you have done is put AS into the very deep crevices/cracks of your CPU (which is what you want) so even when you clean off the base there will still be some in there. After that step you then proceed as above (spread it on HS, put some on CPU core, etc...).
