I was wondering if Arthur C Clarke was in residence in Sri Lanka. Found this today and turns out he was but is fine.

And in a bit of irony (though not much as he's fine), take a look at the Clarke Foundation's Project WARN:

In particular a simulation and test is being planned in the Pacific Region in 2005 to determine to how to use the latest information and sensing technology more effectively in the advent of that a major tsunami might impact an Asian country or island.

SIR ARTHUR IS FINE AFTER QUAKE

27 Dec 2004

This email from Sir Arthur was relayed from intermediary Neil McAleer:

"Sent: Monday, December 27, 2004 12:17 AM
Subject: Aftermath of tidal wave
Dear all,
Thank you for your concern about my safety in the wake of Sunday's devastating tidal wave.
I am enormously relieved that my family and household have escaped the ravages of the sea that suddenly invaded most parts of coastal Sri Lanka, leaving a trail of destruction.
But many others were not so fortunate. For hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans and an unknown number of foreign tourists, the day after Christmas turned out to be a living nightmare reminiscent of The Day After Tomorrow.
Among those affected are my staff based at our diving station in Hikkaduwa and holiday bungalow in Kahawa - both beachfront properties located in areas worst hit. We still don't know the fully extent of damage as both roads and phones have been damaged. Early reports indicate that we have lost most of our diving equipment and boats. Not all our staff members are accounted for - yet.
This is indeed a disaster of unprecedented magnitude for Sri Lanka which lacks the resources and capacity to cope with the aftermath. We are all trying to contribute to the relief efforts. We shall keep you informed as we learn more about what happened.
Curiously enough, in my first book on Sri Lanka, I had written about another tidal wave reaching the Galle harbour (see Chapter 8 in The Reefs of Taprobane, 1957). That happened in August 1883, following the eruption of Krakatoa in roughly the same part of the Indian Ocean.

Arthur C Clarke was never accused of anhything like that, was he? He is a fantastic writer. He's lived there for some time now, hasn't he?

Jet Li was in Thailand at a resort, but managed to save himself and his daughter, but apparently the area he was in was hit very hard

Heh...I was thinking it...

Was there really something about ACC being a pedo, or are you wanks just going on because of the reputation of that part of the world for such things?

The pedo rumours were false. They were created by a British tabloid to create controversy.

Sri Lankan Police Clear Clarke

Sri Lankan police said there is no evidence to support allegations that legendary SF author Arthur C. Clarke is a pedophile, according to CNN. The allegations were made by the British tabloid The Sunday Mirror on Feb. 1 when the paper quoted four young men who supposedly had sexual liaisons or sexual discussions with Clarke.

Two of the men have since admitted they were paid to talk to the newspaper and three of the four were interviewed by police, who subsequently determined Clarke "has not violated any Sri Lankan laws or committed any crime," according to the Associated Press. The police, who also interviewed Clarke during their investigations, have indicated they may file charges against the paper as well as the reporters involved with the story.

In a prepared statement, Clarke said, "The first months of 1998 have been the most unpleasant of my life, but I am now certain that out of evil may come forth a great deal of good." The 80-year-old author plans to file a defamation suit against the tabloid and has promised that any award he receives "will be used to support genuine children and young persons' organisations here, as well as the Ragama Rehabilitation Hospital, of which I am honoured to be Patron."
