I'm having a LOT of pain/stiffness in the morning but what's getting really difficult is that I awake several times at night because pressure points of the hip/knee are hurting.

I have a pillowtop mattress, I also have a memory foam bed topper, what's the best sleep solution.

My sister had bad back problems (pain/stiffness) in her old bed and now swears by the sleep number bed, might want to look into that.

I have no personal experience, but I'd think the memory foam would be the most effective between it and the pillowtop. (springs = pressure on pressure points)

I usually take an extra strength advil before I go to bed when the arthritis in my knee acts up.

I really helps me get a good nights sleep.

I too used to have all sorts of supportive type sleeping pads, mattress, etc. I found by going the other way- very firm mattress with only a medium thickness pad- that I no longer woke up in the middle of the night because of discomfort.

I also do some isometric exercises such as push ups, deep knee bends, etc and stretch before going to bed... this lubricates everything. You'd think that would keep you from falling asleep- I'm so used to it now that I can do 100 knee bends and 100 push ups and be asleep 5 minutes after that.

Hope this helps, or at least gives you something else to try...

Have you tried taking Glucosamine supplements? They have helped out my knees tremendously.

they're pretty much useless for hip pain though. The NSID's help but rip my guts up. I'm probably going to start taking plain asprin.

I have mild arthritis in my knees and right hip. When I'm particulary bothered there are two things that help, meditation and sleeping with a pillow between my knees to level my hips.

Aspirin is also an NSAID (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug)

have you tried the selective cox 2 inhibitors such as Celebrex they cause less GI symptoms (ulcers) not sure about diarrhea.

If your arthritis is bad enough you may need to see a rheumatologist , there are lots of different medication for arthritis depending on the type and severity of the symptoms, (immunomodulators, steroids).

you want to keep your joints moblie to prevent contractures and joint deformities.

I'm going to have to speak with my doctor soon as this problem has gradually been getting worse over the last few months. I am just recovering from the flu now and my nighttime hip pain is now over the point of tolerance.

I have arthritis in over 50% of my joints. Pretty much debilitating.
Tried Celebrex, worked a little, but mostly relied on Extra Strength Bayer aspirin until about 5 months ago.
Found a new Doctor, he put me on Meloxicam, 15 mg. a day.
Never felt better in my life!

Just a bit off topic but wasn't the whole point of taking water beds off the market was that it gave no support since it is soft and yet they market beds made with memory foam? It sounds a bit ridiculous to me and went 2 steps backwards.

Celebrex made a world of a difference for me. It made me feel like I had new knees and hands.

Welcome to my world. I have almost no cartilege left in one knee, the other one is beat to hell, and the back is beyond repair according to my neurosurgeon. They offer me all kinds of nifty pain killers, but since I'm going to school full time, I can't/won't take them. (I tell the doc I'm stupid enough naturally, I don't need any chemical help with that!)
I take quite a bit of aspirin, excedrin, ibuprofen and naproxen. I am always careful to take it with food to help minimize the amount of stomach discomfort however...with a stomach as big as mine, that'd be a LOT of discomfort...;)

You may have to experiment with different NSAIDS and/or combinations of them. Excedrin is basically aspirin, acetominophen, and caffiene, so at night, I might take the aspirin and tylenol so I don't get the caffiene, or aspirin and ibuprofen, etc. Again, you have to be cautious of stomach irritation, but taking them with some food helps me a LOT.

I have a history with metholtrexate (and folic acid), plaquenil, naprosyn, and enbrel as arthritis treatments.

Do go see a rheumatologist. They've got the experience a regular doctor lacks. Where do you live? There are some good arthritis message boards out there where you can find a doctor recommendation.

Probably a dumb question, but have you tried sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees?

It helps me, and I've found that not just any size pillow will do...larger ones hurt my hip, and too small makes my back hurt.
