So, even though I watched the replay 1000 times, did Artest hit the guy that actually threw the cup at him? Or was mistaken identity?
Mistaken identity. Presumably part of what got Artest in so much trouble is that he didn't see who threw the cup and just guessed when he attacked someone. The fact Artest was attacking the wrong guy may have also provoked the crowd further.

does anyone know who threw the cup?

the guy in the white hat and blue shirt that punched artest in the face from behind. ESPN had a camera angle where you could see him underhand fling the cup, then put his hands in his pockets, like he did nothing. The guy in the glasses was laughing and jumping when artest got hit, and that's what Artest saw, and assumed he was the one who threw it.

After reading about Artest I think he should be banned from the NBA, seems like he is nothing but a punk.

One Artest didnt punch the short guy in the stands, he pushed the guy down and tried to punch him but was held back. Jackson sucker punched someone with a haymaker. The only guy Artest actually punched was some lardass that went on to the court with his hand cocked, Artest dropped his fat ass with one hit.

Artest was benched for two games this month for asking Pacers coach Rick Carlisle for time off because of a busy schedule that included promoting a rap album.

Artest was suspended twice by the NBA last season, once for leaving the bench during a fracas at a Pacers-Celtics playoff game; the other for elbowing Portland's Derek Anderson. During the 2002-03 season, Artest was suspended five times by the NBA and once by the Pacers for a total of 12 games.

Artest also once grabbed a television camera and smashed it to the ground after a loss to the Knicks two years ago.

Sounds like a punk to me

Eh, no sympathy for him. If the league didn't come down harshly on this they could just write off any modicum of respect that the NBA has left.

My fanatasy BB team just took a kick to the crotch as well. Jermaine was my leading PF.

Well...now his foot gets a little more time to heal up.

Anyone notice that he seems to lay down on the table, as to say, "Look what I started", pat on the back.

If so... Artest deserves anything and everything that get thrown at him.

It sure looked like he clubbed the guy to me. Either way, the fact that he put his hands on the wrong guy = big payday for unfortunate fan.

Bottom line, no matter what the fans do, players can't just run into the stands and attack someone. Security in the arena (or stadium) should take care of that, throw the fan out and the team should ban them from games for life. If a fan throws an object at a player, the local cops can also potentially file charges against the fan for assault (depending on what was thrown).

So the fans were in the wrong, but as a player you simply can NEVER go into the stands after a fan. The league simply cannot affort to permit it. That guy who got hit by Artest just got himself a nice payday......

before i start pissing off artest fans, let me make this point: i respect artest's game, a lot! he is an amazing defender and also a good offensive player. he is a crucial player for indy, and thanks to him, indy was the top 2 teams in the east, along w/ the stones. now indy will be hard pressed to make the top 3 in the eastern conference, imo. they'll still be pretty good, but now a less of a championship contender.

NBA had to set an example of artest. one mainly because he broke the cardinal rule: don't ever go into the stands! which incited the whole - riot esq mayhem that followed. i know that getting a beer dumped on you isn't something you can just look over, and i saw many that made the argument: he was "just minding his own business" so it's not his fault. but let me ask, what's worse? getting a beer dumped on you or almost getting your neck twisted off? he backed off ben, but made a rash decision to pit bull his way into the stands, trying to find the person that threw the beer on him started the whole thing.

his track record made nba's decision easier to make and also to defend. everyone knew he was a ticking time bomb. that's why he was heckled even more by fans, in every arena, not just detroit. i'd imagine, not just detroit. i remember last year at the pistons game during the regular season, after the game, while artest was exiting, some punk kid was talking smack, artest almost went into the stands to kick that kid's butt. he pretended to lift up the rope separating the floor from the bleachers, going after the kid. (was it for show? maybe, but still)

suspensions while heavy isn't even half of it, imo. there will be criminal charges, both for the fans going out of control and for artest, jackson and o'neal.

Once again another thread about this topic that has been infested with NBA noobs. You don't read about a player and then make a judgement based on what you read. You watch him play and see how he really is. Depending on where/what you read you may have an incorrect opinion.

And to the guy that said how he sat on the table and had his hands in a "look what I started" pose or whatever, you are a fvcking idiot. When I get pissed in games, that's exactly how my arms are. He was just trying to cool down so he didn't react to Big Ben's push. Fvcktard.

So does he still get paid while on this suspension?
Nope, my guess is his contract allows the team to not pay him while he's out on a suspension, so he's out a LOT of money.

Somehow I think that had it been someone who had never been in trouble with the league, the league might have gone a little less harsh on him. With Artest's track record, the league came down on him like a ton of bricks.

I hope he sues the motherfvcker who threw the beer at him, gets as much as he can for his losses in his contract earnings.

Vernon Maxwell slugs Portland heckler (Houston Rockets at Portland, 1995)
With the Rockets on the way to a 120-82 loss, Maxwell lost his cool and plunged 12 rows deep to punch a fan who had been heckling him. "If I had been there, I'd have probably cold-cocked him, too," said Maxwell's lawyer. "You can't think of anything more vulgar, more fighting words, than what this guy said to Vernon." Maxwell got a 10-game suspension and $20,000 fine from the NBA.

Wow, and the fan didn't throw anything either. Maxwell only got a 10 game suspension. The NBA dislikes Ron Artest, plain and simple.

i think the rest artest got it so severely is becuz of his track record, and also becuz of the actions following his initial charge at the fan.
