GF wants to go jogging.
So, I have to figureout how to set this thing up.
Where the heck is the software for this thing to load mp3's from the PC?

there's a really low resource hogging rio interface here: linkie it's called riorio and even works in XP/2k!

edit: sorry, forgot, it's ONLY for the RIO 500. that's what my sister had so I got that for her. If your GF has something else, don't bother going to that link :>

And, I swear the official software is trying to do some crap liek install a different mp3 on my system..
Why do companies do this crap?

RIOSitude (freeware) is much better than the bloated crap which comes with the RIO players. I use it all the time and its great. If you decide to use it and you haven't yet installed the driver, go to the link below first.

You can download latest drivers and firmwares from RioWorld.

So, how does this thing work?
Do I need a firmware update?
Then, is there a certain program which loads the files, but the third party stuff just is a different GUI for it?
The Thirdparty stuff I have found, like the RIOSuite mentioned above, seems to still require the "official" RIO software.
And, one of them is asking me for a registration number?
WTF!?!?!?
Hopefully one of you guru's can explane this to me, thanks.

Go to Rioworld.org for all your rio needs. If you got a rio600 or higher you can use windows media player, if you're stuck with a 500 (like myself, I've found the stupid rioport software to be the most stable and reliable on my system). I tried riostitude and riorio, both great problems, but they just don't work reliably for me (freeze at the worst possible moment).

First off which RIO player do you have??

Do I need a firmware update?

Its a good idea to have the latest firmware for your RIO player for the obvious reasons (bug fixes, new features etc).

Then, is there a certain program which loads the files, but the third party stuff just is a different GUI for it?
The Thirdparty stuff I have found, like the RIOSuite mentioned above, seems to still require the "official" RIO software.

You don't need the "official" RIO software to for the third party stuff to work - however you will need to download the stand alone RIO driver (download from RioWorld link above). Y'see the official software installs the driver but if you don't install the official software you wont have a driver, so therefore you need the standalone driver.

The third party apps are full utilities, they are not just GUIs.

What you need to do...

1. Uninstall the official software if you've already installed it.
2. Download the relevant driver from RioWorld
3. Apply the latest firmware
4. Download third party app (I recommend RIOSitude which is freeware, linked above).

And, one of them is asking me for a registration number?

Don't know which one you are using there - RIOSitude doesn't require anything like that, however certain third party apps are shareware as opposed to freeware.

Hopefully one of you guru's can explane this to me, thanks.

If you need any more advice, PM me.
