Arrrggh!! Stupid wireless mouse problem

My mother in law wanted a new cordless mouse for Christmas. So I got her one, a basic Kensington wireless mouse. The receiver is connected to the computer (home built but not by me, AMD CPU, Asus MB) via a USB-PS/2 adapter and then to the PS/2 mouse port on the computer.

Problem is that after the computer boots up, it gets into the cycle where the mouse will "pause" for about a half second every 3 or 4 seconds. So if you are moving the mouse across the screen it will move, pause, move, pause, etc. Very frustrating. A regular PS/2 mouse connected to the computer does not behave this way.

First I thought it was low RAM. (They had 256mb, running Windows 2000 pro, McAfee internet suite and a bunch of other stuff). So I added 512mb more. System is faster, but it doesn't help the mouse problem. I've not loaded any other mouse related software.

Any ideas? I had to leave their place before I could finish. Would plugging the mouse receiver directly into a USB port help? They only have 2 USB ports via an add in card so I'm not sure that there is an open port.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ok. I will try that. Just wanted some validation that it was worth trying. Any idea why that would make a difference?

Mouse batteries.

I thought there was something wrong with my PC, but it was just the batteries.

If it doesn't clear up after you replace the batteries, try the USB.
