Ok i have a Duron 700, abit kt7a, and a FOP38 HSF. I CANNOT for the life of me push that damn clip down! And yes i am using a screwdriver to push it down, grrrr.

And about when i tried for the 10th time, i heard a little grinding noise (i guess my cpu might be dead huh)? Am i doing something wrong here? Are the FOP38's poorly designed? I mean i'm not exactly Mr. Barbells here, but i can't be THAT freaking weak, can i!?

Should i take off those rubber feet on the cpu?

Uh, are you sure you're not trying to mount it upside down. It should not take brute force. :Q

well does anyone have any ideas? I hope my cpu isn't dead, but... i want to give it a go anyway. Is there anyway to modify the clip?

well, i haven't actually installed a fop38 b4
however, amd has a good guide to properly installing an hsf.

i think it's at www1.amd.com/athlon/config

it has detailed pics and everything

also, make sure your cpu is properly seated. sorry i couldn't be of more help :(

good luck

i have an FOP-32 which is the same heat-sink as your 38 and although i love the performance i can tell you that those #@&% clips are a real pain . make sure you have the other side all the way up against the sink , i always end up using 2 screwdrivers one to push down and one to fasten the clip. just be careful.

WTF is it? :Q
This is newbie syndrome in it's purest form. ;)
I'm sorry to rant but I fail to see how this many people F*** it up!!! :(
I install them day in and day out and never have broken, NOT 1 component. :p

Part of me feels compasion, then part of me asks, if you some of you guys can't complete a rudementary task such as putting on a heatsink, WTF are you doing building or upgrading computers? Argh! I feel the pain and frustration....I think I need a valium. ;)

compuwiz1,

I disagree. I had the FKP32 and it's clip was reportedly very similar to the FOP32's. And this clip sucks! Believe me, I also made lots of experiences with various clip designs from Alpha, Coolermaster (they use a different clip an almost every HS), Pentalpha and more, but the FKP32's clip was by far the toughest to handle and in my opinion even an experienced PC builder is "allowed" to have problems with it. Actually my clip broke as well!

I agree with Hanky. I broke my clip as well, but have never had any problems whatsoever with the Alpha clips. I might even venture to say that the golden orb was easier to put on, lol

I didn't break my FOP32-1 clip, but I damn near almost cut my thumb in half before I thought of using a screwdriver to put pressure on the clip ;)
That is one tough clip.

I have a FOP38 and the clip is a REAL pain in the ass to fit. If you bend some of the "spring" out of it before trying it makes it a hell of a lot easier to fit. I do mean a LITTLE though as too much will make the heatsink slide around.

Hope this Helps!

If you are having this much trouble, have you thought of using the clip from the hsf that you are replacing? Just an idea guys, might want to try it.

My experience is the same. Plus with the unfortunately luck of breaking the lug off the cpu socket. So now I am trying to figure out what to do with my new MB.

My brilliant advice? Try again. Or try mounting the heatsink on without the fan first, then screw the fan in afterwards. Worked for my Alpha.

guys..it isnt that big of an ordeal. i dont understand all this talk about breaking CPUs and breaking HSF CLIPS! i wouldnt call myself an expert, but im no newbie. i havnt even come close to breaking anything, and IMHO you have to be kind of dumb to break one. now under certain circumstances maybe it was a faulty piece...thats cool. but i just dont see what the problem is...i never have ANY of the problems people always complain about and im definitely absent minded about being gentle on my HSF. i dunno what to say..i mean that sounded rude but ive been holding that back for a while...so dont take it personally anyone, i am just confused/frustrated is all.

i know this was no help, im sorry
