Going to get flamed for this but I blame it on the Unions. They had their need at one point but now MOST (not all) are nothing more than corrupt groups that strong arm owners who have put everything on the line to start a company. Until the unions lay off, I don't see much more coming back to the US. If I ever start a business and my employees go Union, I'll shut down my company. [/minirant]

I agree. Unions have become what they were there to prevent.

There are some usefull unions that exsist. Others though, Like the United Steel Workers of America, can bite my nuts. . .

You are correct, they are causing problems that of which they try to prevent. They get in the way and make for long lengthy debates. They create turmoil in the company, and try to stray employee's from getting work done to protest their rights. Its sad really. If a company lay's you off, so be it, its not in your realm, pack your bags and move on, there is always a better job.

I get it, we're just a nation of consumers, not producers - we'll all end up serving pizzas to each other!!

What's so bad about that? I like pizza 🙂

Airplanes. Software. Food. Furniture. Paper.

We import quite a bit of food.. Produce.

But no, it generally seems that nothing of quality is designed and Made in the USA anymore.

Our military planes are made here, as well as most of our other military equipment. That's all pretty quality. Intel makes their processors here and designs them here, all quality for the most part.

Klipsch speakers. Not too shabby in my opinion.

How about the Corvette? Aren't those big @ss Pioneer plasma screens made in the U.S.?

Man, everything cool is made here!

generally unions exist in sectors that have deserved unions.
Disneyland Employees Union? There are other theme park unions too, as well as race track (Los Alamitos Employees Union, et al) unions that allow a signifigant portion of the employees to be laid off every year. Yet even seasonal employees have to pay union dues.

My grandfather was a union member and worked as a dockworker. Made bank. Yet he was drunk/hung over 2 days out of 5 and didn't go to work. His boss tried to fire him several times but the union stepped in and wouldn't allow it.

I used to work for a drug store that was union (!). New employees were forced to work for minimum wage and raises were on a scale provided by the union. We paid them dues. All I saw come out of it was lower pay and employees that should have been fired weren't. I later transferred to a different store that wasn't union (same company tho) and got an instant BIG raise. They couldn't believe I was making so little.

Granted there was a need for unions. That need is slowly disappearing. I wouldn't mind seeing guild-type unions like the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers). Those groups seem to actually care about the members in them.

It is because we have evolved from an industrial type society, to a society where most jobs are based on customer service and human interaction.

mass typo's...must be the lortab

Not only are we a capital good producing nation, we are a service, and increasingly information based economic entity. Software, entertainment, financial advisors, accountants, teachers, professors, and any other job that doesn't produce tangible goods but rather a valuable service to those desiring financial advice, an education, information regarding allocation of corporate assets. Lets see the Chinese offer those services here! I'd rather pay them a dollar to make my toy airplane than $30,000 to teach a kid.

Ding Ding!

With the money we make we purchase things too expensive to make in the US now. No one working for a few dollars a week is going to be able to survive in the US for long, and that is what people here would need to earn to produce the inexpensive products you enjoy. One can argue the morality of the situation, but we all enjoy such a high standard of living because someone elsewhere makes much less than us.

excellent post.

Businesses and people are made in the U.S. Just think about it, you can get a great education here, start a business, invest in others, etc. Our industries are moving more towards intellectual property instead of industrial. As the above post said that manufacturing jobs that do not require as much skill of knowledge are moving out of the country.

I hear they'll be out-sourcing our baby-making abilities to cheaper labor in India.
