i built my rig around september 15th about a month ago here. i ordered this part about the 7th of september.

two nights ago i put my computer into sleep mode around 3am i here a loud beeping and i see the computer completely shuts down (when in sleep mode i could see the blue led blinking). wierd but i go back to sleep, i'll check it in the morning. when i do i see the ups is off, i reset it and try the computer..... nothing. i plug the computer in a different outlet to see..... nothing. i pull out the psu and smell it but i can't tell if it's really burnt out or what, i plug in the 4volt and 12 volt rails into mobo to see if i get the post light.... nothing. conclusion? month old psu is dead. i'm going to as k my IT guy at work to loan me an old psu to test and see, make sure the psu is the only problem. damn, i had really good temps on my rig with stock cooling (33/31 cpu/mobo idle, 50/35 cpu/mobo under load.

i may just bite the bullit and get the antec neo power.

so damn true,

I had bad luck with their product too, even their heatsinks are crap

ENERMAX ALL THE WAY!!!

wow, that's like the 4th or 5th report of one of these that I've read here, about them failing. I also know someone that got one included with a fancy TT case that they bought, and it's unstable. I'm starting to believe that TT PSUs are nothing but hyped-up crap. 🙁

Fortron Source (many Sparkle-branded models, some AOpen, and some others) have always been reliable for me.

Deer/Allied/L&C = burn themselves up if you even look at them the wrong way, avoid at all costs.

CodeGen and RaidMax = I haven't really decided yet. My KT400/XP1800+ system running with 4 opticals, 3 HDs, full load of cards, USB HIDs, extra case fans, has been stable for over two years, in a cheapo CodeGen case w/350W PSU that I bought, no problems to report. Same system caused my 300W Deer PSU to cook itself about a week after I installed it into my old tower.

I've got an overclocked (to 2.2GHz) 2800+ NF7-S rig with three 120GB and two 40gb seagates (on ATA PCI card), 2 optical drives, an overclocked 9700 Pro, 8x80mm fans all on a modified (to be quieter) 300w Sparkle with a 12v Panaflo. I've had this $30 PSU for 4 years and it still runs like a champ with all this hardware.

From what I understood Thermaltake was pretty highly regarded, but after this thread I'm not so sure...

I was looking at Antec and Enermax, but I think I'm just going to go cream of the crop, break down and shell out the extra clams for a PC Power and Cooling PSU...

Ive been using the enermax noisetaker series, I built two pcs with them, and they are great. Pretty much silent and very reliable. Go with them for a new one.

Thermaltake PSUs are very high quality units. Thermaltake bashers, go troll somewhere else because their PSU's are top notch. Granted the fact that quite a lot of their range isnt great but we are only concerned with PSU's here.

Just because a few PSU's from 1 brand decide to pop at the same time doesnt mean they are crap. Ive seen plenty of complaints about even Antec and Enermax in my years as an Anandtech Forum user and if I listened to every complaint, Id never buy a PC because everything has a chance of dieing.

Apparently Thermaltakes PSU's are rebadged Enlight units so they arent exactly lightweights. Ill vouch for both of the Thermaltake PSU's in this house. Stable and reliable.

Unfortunate if it took out anything else but then again, if any PSU goes, theres a chance its going to take something with it. Hope everything is ok.

god, i hope so too. i have to wait and see what thermaltake does, before i make a decision. i will see if i can get my hands on another psu to see how extensive is the damage. i pray it is only with the psu.

Yep, I have a really hard time buying anything made by Thermaltake, let alone a PSU (I'd never buy one of their PSU's)

I had that exact same power supply go out on me and took a 250 gig hdd full of unbacked up pictures with it. I bought a 530w Sparkle PSU and I could'nt be happier. No more el cheapo power supplies for me.

Well, I've seen first-hand a system with a supposed "480W" TT PSU, that couldn't handle an A7N8X Deluxe, Athlon XP 2800+, MSI GF4 Ti4200 VIVO, 3 HDs, a couple opticals, 5 case fans, and a cold-cathode light. Go figure. If the system is booted with the light off, it will boot, and then the light can be switched on afterwards. Apparently those PSUs are rated in a rather optomistic fashion. I'd put them closer to 300-350W true spec.

the TT 480 watt PSU's are rebranded Enlights, this specific model doesn't not have a very high 12V rail so if you overload it like in VirtualLarry's example it prolly won't cope, TT / Enlight PSU's are good quality, TT is just a marketing company when it comes to power supplies and their is nothing wrong w/ their quality. which sad to say can't be said of all their products.

I got a 420w TT because so many people were saying how good they are, and it died on me after only 2 days. I am running with one again now, because I RMA'd it, but I wouldn't trust in on my main rig over my 350w enermax.

My ALLIED 400W PSU has been fine ever since I got it 5 months ago.

Rails:

VCore: 1.50
3.3v - 3.23v
+5v - 5.00v
+12v - 11.93

My friend recently bought one too, and it runs fine. I'm also overclocking both my video card and CPU a bit.

Bottom line: some psus just suck. It's usually not just the brand.

If you want a recommendation on a new one, I got the Enermax NoiseTaker 475, and I've been quiet pleased in all respects. Nice and quiet -- received a good review at SilentPCReview.com.

EDIT: LOL -- notice the autopilot word substitution? "Quiet" should be quite. Amusing AND accurate statement!
